Arrest of Qaran leaders right way to end political corruption

Recommended Posts

During my recent visit to Somaliland, the government has arrested the leaders of the proscribed political party “Qaran”. At the beginning of 2007, these leaders launched an illegal political campaign overlooking the stipulations of the constitution that limit the number of political parties to three and allows the existence of political groups or organizations affiliated to the existing political parties only. The government had no other option but to arrest them as they started a nationwide campaign misleading the public.

The “Qaran leaders” have started visiting various cities, asking the people to vote for them without laying the basic foundation of the party through a legal registration in the country. The government had peacefully asked the leaders to refrain from corrupting the minds of citizens especially those who don’t fully understand how political parties are formed. Unfortunately, the leaders refused to heed the government’s appeal and continued with their illegal political corruption of the country. The government (as per the Somaliland Constitution) has the full and sole authority to get rid of all forms of corruption including political, security and economic. The Dahir Riyale regime enforced their immunity and authority against such politically corrupted individuals – who will do everything to win the presidential seat.

The Chairman of the so-called Qaran Party Dr. Gaboose formed SAHAN Party during the laying down of the Somaliland Multiparty Political System. He, however, failed to win the vote of the Somaliland people – who voted for UCID, UDUB and Kulmiye to be the only three national political parties in the country. He shunned the teachings of democracy which states that you should accept the results of an election even if you end up as the loser. But with the rate things are going, it seems that the doctor will continue fighting for his political party until he wins the presidential seat. Eng. Mohammed Hashi Elmi joined Kulmiye at the time when the Multiparty System was just starting but he did not comply with the internal rules and regulations of Kulmiye. It is then clear that the Qaran leaders are bent on winning the highest post in the country but they are doing it through wrong procedures.

The people of Somaliland voted for the three existing political parties through a free and fair election and the government should not tolerate such corrupted and barbaric ideologies. We – as citizens of Somaliland – understand that the current parties have not met our expectations. These political parties are highly corrupted but Somalilanders should understand that our country has limited capacity to host more then three political parties. Each political party gets sl.sh 40 million each from national budget to support their campaign, our budget is very weak to host another forty million; even our democracy is too young to process four political parties. We know that the incumbent chairmen of these political parties have acquired these parties based on tribal or personal motives but the constitutional way is to fight them within the party.

The political parties are national assets and nobody should be allowed to privately own them including the incumbent chairmen of these parties. UDUB, UCID and Kulmiye leadership should be circulated between the citizens of Somaliland. It is clear that some individuals, based on their tribal affiliations, have dominated the parties but instead of forming new parties, it is easier and faster to reform the current ones. Qaran leaders should only go through existing three political parties to win presidential election. The ongoing arrests and political confusion in Somaliland brought hope to the Somaliland enemies especially the members of the Imbagathi government.

Today, Somaliland needs recognition from the international community as this is very crucial to Somaliland and its future developments. The present political confusion and corruption in the country only impede our objectives of winning international recognition. This confusion and our enemies will convey a message to the international community that Somaliland is not mature enough as it had become a government that slowdown our move towards international recognition.

My final word,

Dear citizens, UCID, UDUB or KULMIYE are just politicians (politicians are liars) so we should do everything to solidify our national integrity, security, economy and education. We should elect and vote the right person without considering the tribe or region the candidate belongs to. Civilians will suffer if Somaliland loses international support more than the politicians because they hold foreign passports and can flee from the country at the time of conflict.

Allah bless Somaliland……………………………. We all stand united
