RedSea Posted February 7, 2009 Somaliland Regional Livestock Quarantine Ready for Export Bebera (Bederwanaag) Feb 7, 2009 - Saudi Arabian investor Mr Said Suleiman Al Jabiry was received in Somaliland port city of Berbera early today by the regional leaders. Mr Jabiry expected to cut the ribbon for the Somaliland Regional Livestock Quarantine which has been under construction for the past two years. The facility is located on the outskirts of the city. The facility is expected to quarantine up to 1.5-2 million animals per year for export to the Middle East. Mr Jabiry signed a livestock agreement with the government of Somaliland in 2007, however a number of Somaliland livestock traders questioned the legality of Mr Jabiry’s deal with Somaliland while others seen the agreement as a monopoly by the rich Saudi. Mr Jabiry was led around by officials from Sahil region and together they inspected the facility, which has the main treatment area, housing for the animals, storages, offices, and others. Mr Jabiry is expected to travel to the capital of Somaliland Hargeisa to finalize the agreement with the central government. The bulk of Somaliland’s exports are livestock, hides and skins. Agriculture, mostly cereal production, is minimal. Somaliland’s port of Berbera has also grown as a major export port for Ethiopia since the Ethio-Eritrea conflict. Despite Somaliland’s lack of international recognition - the Somaliland Shilling has better value than that of Somalia, where 1 SL shilling is worth 1000 Somali Shilling. The smallest note in Somalia is 1000 shillings, in Somaliland - its 1 shilling which is a coin and the largest is 500 shilling. Blessed Posted February 11, 2009 ^No, Jabiry will be rich. I don't see how this will help UDUB in the election? Even if this was transparent (it isn't), it's far too little, too late. Berbera is a shadow of her former self. Intay u sacab tumayaan, I wish reer SL start taking these thieving cretins to account.
