Nur Posted October 28, 2006 JIHAD, The Ultimate Devine Worship, Not Necesarily A WARSHIP! Nomads As promised, here are my spontaneous thoughts on this important aspect of Islamic faith, I am writing impromptu online without editing so bear with my spelling errors as usual, I just cant pump thoughts under spell check! as this has been my method, I simply couldnt find a free time to write offline. InshAllah the first paragraph shall open the topic to golden gates of knowledge. Somalia is poised for a regional conflict of unknown proportions with neighboring Ethiopia, two poor nations being played on each other by regional interest groups, if indeed Ethiopia does not deffuse the tension it has created by supporting an unpopular oppressive anarchist governmement that caused 16 years of death and devastation to its own people, an ugly war that may cause the fragmentaion of Ethiopia itself may be in the making, the Ethiopian supported Somali Warlord Government aka TFG, belongs to jail, not on the seat of a government, for its crimes against humanity, stealing of public wealth, damage to environment. The UIC is thus at odds with a country that we share a lot of good and bad History, The UIC has declared Jihad against the invading Ethiopian forces on Somali soil, to many Somalis and westerners, the word Jihad sends fear of thoughtless holy war by fanatics, but from the true Islamic point of view as applied to the islamic Courts of somalia, Jihad is a holy duty to uphold justice, do good on earth , feed the hungry, educate the ignorant, against the odds of an internationally recognized and sponsored government of the Warlords, appointed by a foreign entity to serve the interest of its bankrollers against its poor and suffering citizens. What is Jihad Jihad is an Arabic word which means: 1. Effort 2. Struggle Jihad in the Sharia i Law is defined as any effort that one has to do for preserving his faith, a faith that is sent by Allah for the good of mankind, and its wellbeing on earth and in the next life. It progressed from the first migration to Ethiopia when fighting was not prescribed, to the struggle with ones self by forcing his/her soul to obey Allah against its wish for desires that lead it stary and away from the path of its maker. Initially, Muslims were ordered self restraint, and prayers, even if their folk mete them with unkind punishment for their new faith of stark monotheism and worship of a single God. That God has perfect attributes , that conflicts with the attributes of the Polytheists dieties. A God who is alive and never dies, wise, powerful, gentle, forgiving and kind. In the early days of Islam, new Muslims were persecuted in Mecca by their own tribe, following Muhammad meant facing assured hardships and pain, some even physical and possible death at times, so it is recorded that the first refugees of that oppression heard that there was a just and fair King in Ethiopia, his name was called Negashi or the Negus, who was residing in the heart of the Ethiopian Kingdom of Axum, ( The Homeland of the Tigre, the rulers of Ethiopia) the oldest Christian homeland in Africa. The first recorded religious migration driven by religious persecution began its journey from Arabia to Abbysinia, present day Ethiopia, where history records as the trip that gave Islam its first ever supporter, the Negus of Abysinia, a devout Christian King. The Negus of Abyssinia, recieved the deleagtion of twelve men, four women, led by Othman ibn Affan who was married to Roqayyah, the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad SAWS., with the highest honor, the oppressed companions found in the King of Ethiopia the kindest heart for their plight and cause. During their stay in Ethiopia, they heard a false news that Qureish tribe has entirely accepted Islam, and as a result they decided to come back. They were shocked to find out that the news was false, their suffering and punishment began anew, with more pain and agony, however, and agianst the wish of Quresih, their numbers kept growing exponentially, in a short time the new converts reached 83 men, 19 women and again they braved the second escape migration to Ethiopia, this time though, they were more careful. upon their arrival, the king, like he did last time, provided them with a safe heaven from persecution, so they worshipped Allah in peace in Ethiopia as guests to the Royal court of Ethiopia's kind Christian King. Qureish could not stomach to see the new believers safe and sound, it saw danger lurking to destroy their way of life, thus they sent a delagation to the king of Ethiopia for their extradition. The King after asking the refugees about their faith and listening the recitation of the Chapter Mary in the Holy Quran wept, saying that they are his brothers, he asked the polytheist Quresh delegation to leave and gave unlimited protection to the new Muslim refugees. That was a King, at a distant time, a man who wept out of knowledge of his faith, and today, at his country there is another king, Meles Zenawi, from the same town Axum, but the two men are far apart in their convictions and loyalties. Mels Zenawi spent his revolutionary days in Mogadishu Somalia, he knows the alleys of Xamar better than many warlords, he was a friend of the Somalis, along with the Eritreans, who were also his cousins and supporters in his struggle to topple Mengistu haile. Meles victoriously entered Addis at the same time when Siad Barre was toppled by his angry people. That was the good side story and relationship of the Muslim Somalia and Christian Ethiopia. With that background in mind, lets us go back to the meaning of Jihad in a more formal way: Jihaad was revealed in the Quraan in four meanings: Jihaad comes from the root word JAHADA, linguistically in the Quraan, it means: 1. Goal/Objective JAHD ( Wa aqsamuu billahi jahda aymaanihim, la in jaa'at hum aayatun la yu'minunna bihaa) Ancaam 109. 2. Maximum Ability/ Hardship JUHD ( Wa ladhiina laa yajiduuna illa juhdahum, fa yaskharuuna minhum) Tawbah 79. 3. Resistance JAAHADA ( Wa in jaahadaaka calaa an tushrika bii maa leysa laka bihi cilmun, falaa tudichumaa, wa saaxibhumaa fiddunyaa macruufaa) Cankabuut, 8 4. Fight JAAHADA FII SABIILILLAH ( Kaman aamana billahi wal yowmi aakhar wa jaahada fii sabiilillah) Tawbah 19 As we can see from these four main meanings, JIHAAD: Is a Hardship that is endured for sole Goal of Allah's pleasure, that requires resistance of temptations of good life on earth , and when necessary a fight and generous spending of wealth and time for the cause of Allah. Jihad, therefore is the higest pillar of Islam, its the beacon of all other pillars like Prayers, Fasting and Pilgrimmage. Islam honors those who take part in Jihad, and Allah promises them the highest place in heaven. And because Jihad is a prescribed pillar in Islam, it must not conflict with its ideals and teachings. The Prophet Muhammad SAWS sent armies for Jihad telling them not to harm the elderly, children, women and the non combatants, not to destroy trees and the environment, not to maim, invade privacy, and properties of the noncombatants citizens. They must uphold the law of Allah and become examples of the message for which they have sacrificedd their lives and wealth. Salahuddin Al Ayyubi, was an example of the true quality of a Mujahid as he conqured the Crussaders in Palestine, securing the Jewsih and Christian Synagogues and Churches, if he had done what the Spanish has done to Muslims in Spain, there would never be a Jewsih nor a Christian presence in Palestine, but, Islam is the most tolerant faith on earth, its unfortunate that its enemies are painting a different picture of a great faith of humanity. So what is the purpose of Jihad in Islam? Well, If Islam is the body, Jihad is the blood vein that assures the life of all of the other organs, just like blood gives nutrients to the body and removes waste out of the body, without Jihad, Islam as a body dies, it can not sustain itself nor help itself grow in health. If Islam is a nation ( Ummah) then Jihad is the mandatory Military Service required all citizens of any nation to serve part of their time, to sacrifice their time, life and wealth for the preservation of the ideals the nation was founded for. A nation with no ideals vanishes. Which brings us to the concept of Sacrifice. Humanity is a single family with a single God who is their creator. They all worship a superior being, they differ on His qualities, and quantity, but agree on His supremacy. Thus, from ancient time Allah ( God) had communicated with his creatures with a message that is in the capacity of their intellect. One of the principles that all faiths have in common is the concept of sacrifice which is a prelude to an in depth understanding the concept of Jihad in Islam. As all the people of the book are aware, Jihad as the ultimate form of sacrifice is in all three holy scriptures, in the Torah, Gospels and the Quraan. Abraham, the Patriarch of the Abrahamic family of faiths, asked Allah to make his descendants leaders for mankind after fulfilling the sacrifice of his son Ishmael, his wife Hager and also his life, when he was thrown in the fire pit after excercising his freedom of speech against the false Gods at his time. Allah rewared Abraham his wish, with an exception, those evil decendants of Abraham are excluded from the human leadership, thus, we see that Abrahams desendents make up all the Prophets after him. Sacrifice means prioritization, choices and options from which one has to give up an inferior option for a better option. As such, Life on earth is described in the Quraan as the testing ground of these options after Allah has communicated to mankind with clear messages through His Messnegers last of which was Moses, Jesus and Muhammad. Jihad is the epitome of the pain that humans go through in the process of prioritization of their everlasting real interests against their passing, temporal and meagerly perceived interests on earth. Biixi Posted December 17, 2008 I've never suggested they were good guys, they the lesser of the evils.
Fabregas Posted December 17, 2008 Brother, who was the lesser of the two evil: the Ethiopias and the TFG or just the TFG? And, how does one determine what is the lesser of the two evils?
Biixi Posted December 18, 2008 Of course the TFG is the lesser of the evils in and around Somalia. There are more than “two” evils in Somali affairs, and as months go their numbers increase.

Many Muslims, especially most nomads here, may held fatuous believes that Jihad can only be waged by Muslims, not realising that non-Muslims always waged Jihad against Muslims. We know their Jihad can also be subdivided and categorised into different types. Allah permitting, brother Nur, we hope to hear of your understanding of that perspective for the benefit of us all.
