Sheikh Dahir O’Ahmed was picked up from Al-Huda Mosque in Bossaso by Puntland police after his sermon, witnesses reported. In his evening speech, the sheikh called upon followers to wage “jihad” against Ethiopian troops on Somali soil. Puntland officials declined to comment on the arrest. A recent UN report estimated Ethiopian troops inside Somalia to be as high as 8,000 soldiers, even though Addis Ababa denies such high figures. Ethiopia is allied to the Baidoa-based interim Somali government, which was created in 2004 after peace talks in Kenya.
