Jacaylbaro Posted April 2, 2008 Ever heard of Somaliland? If not, don’t feel bad. After all, the self-administering East African country, which is vying to reassert its sovereignty from Somalia, is not internationally recognised. With hopes of adding a G8 nation to its list of international diplomatic backers, a delegation of Somalilander MPs were in Ottawa last week for their fourth-and most successful-mission to Canada. Last time around, the Somalilanders’ biggest meeting was a private sit-down with then- Liberal leadership candidate, and future Prime Minister, Paul Martin. This time, the group had meetings with Foreign Minister Maxime Bernier and CIDA Minister Bev Oda. Whether they got anywhere remains to be seen. Calls to Mr. Bernier’s office and DFAIT asking if recognition was forthcoming were not returned. Somalilander MP Nasir Hagi Ali says his nation voted 97 per cent in favour of sovereignty in a referendum and is a self-governing country. Plus, he said, Somaliland is "really an oasis of peace in the Horn of Africa." Liberal MP Jim Karygiannis, who has a large Somalilander population in his constituency, hosted the delegation. He said he is forming a parliamentary friendship association for Somaliland, which will likely kick off in April. Embassy Magazine Canada
