Mortars kill 6 civilians near Somali peace talks

By Guled Mohamed

MOGADISHU (Reuters) - Mortar bombs fired by suspected Islamist insurgents missed the venue of a major reconciliation meeting in Somalia but killed six civilians including at least five children, residents said on Thursday.

"At least six mortars were fired at the conference. They missed their target and hit Shibiz district. At least five children died. There was also an elderly person who died," resident Abdi Aziz Hussein told Reuters.

The death toll could not immediately be verified.

Asha Hussein, an aunt of one of the dead children, said a mortar shell detonated near where the youngsters were playing.

The conference had earlier resumed amid tight security after explosions echoed across the capital's biggest market in the heaviest fighting in 15 days of non-stop violence.

Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Gedi told delegates gathered at a former police compound in northern Mogadishu that Somalia must redress its reputation as a terrorist haven.

"We have lost trust. We need to return Somalia's reputation back to the world," Gedi said in a brief speech. A security source said Gedi left the venue before the mortar attack.

Somali soldiers, backed by Ethiopian troops, blocked all entry points to the conference venue, which was targeted with mortar bombs during an opening ceremony on Sunday.

Hours before the gathering of more than 1,000 delegates, suspected insurgents fired rockets, mortars and grenades at Somali forces patrolling the sprawling Bakara Market in central Mogadishu, following up with machinegun fire for nearly an hour.

I think the wadaads need to distance themselves from those who act desperately as though the world is coming to an abrupt end! Targeting these odoyaal is not going to benefit anyone really. They may not share the political views or have same political stand as the opposition groups made but they are not certainly the enemy!

Besides here is some logical fallacy to note: if you really think this shir is sham as I do and that it wont achieve what Somalia needs today, why worry who attends it or who doesn’t attend it? If you believe this shir was orchestrated not by the tfg but by the powers that helped Ethiopia occupy the south, and by extension helped tfg , then what is it that you fear that the outcome of such a sham conference would change as far as the current political variables are concern? Perhaps there could be some money that will be given to the tfg! That too shouldn’t be a source of great concern for they do give money to the tfg today, and it didn’t help buy it the legitimacy it so badly desires!

I don’t understand. I think Courts are being outplayed here---they seem to be holed up down in Asmara without much political activities. That Geedi went to Saudi Arabia shows even traditional Court allies are showing signs of wavering! There are certainly a lot of factors to this resistance force against Ethiopia. But the genuinely inspired movements needs to speak out more often with a sense of direction and clear strategy towards achieving the goal of driving Ethiopia out of Somalia! Their silence seems to endorse some of the mindless violence that goes on in Xamar like targeting bunch of odoyaal who were collected and gathered by powers that be!

What this movement needs, in my opinion, is a flexible political wing that can sit down with the devil so to speak, and a ruthless military wing that can squeeze some victories out of what’s a difficult area to operate in, Xamar! They need to campaign and lobby in the Arab and Muslim capitals, and not just sit there in Asmara and ally themselves with questionable characters like Aydid redface.gif !

Allow ma iri~~~

^^Which part of my rant do you think got me there :D ?

I think Courts are being torn apart by desperate and angry entities whose only link is the opposition of Ethiopia and tfg! And sooner or latter they need to make a distinction of what is a legitimate target adeer! I don’t doubt that there is genuine movement that sacrifices both life and limbs to get Ethiopia out of Somalia---but the strategy of it must be honed a bit for them to succeed! In this round, I think Courts acted foolishly by threatening they will target the gathering venue of this conference! For what---to show that Xamar lacks security! Or to prevent America and Europe from supporting Ethiopia and tfg ! The first one needs no proof, and the second one is quite duplicitous! So what is the fuss!

Call them what you want these people are ******.

Do you think these guys are the courts? What/how/when are the courts anyway? Somalia all of it wa qa saanthay! I am beginning to think this is what is wanted civil strive iyo continuation of violence, stealing of resources is easier this way no? because the right steps are not being taken by this government which by and large is in control of the country. Listen Cuz, I read the answer’s you gave me in the other thread, highly appreciated adeer, though I don’t think Ethiopia after investing their sweat and blood is going anywhere anytime soon, and this would build resentment from local populations in the long run if you choose to believe it or not.....However what you didn’t touch upon and should realize if not alreadly is that is in post-conflict societies, when institutions are still fragile, and the population very vulnerable in particular a failed state like Somalia and as u’ve said violent (corrupt) struggle for power and the resources from many different indivduals and entities..........the worst adversary to peace and stability is the circulation of weapons. This is the most vital factor in contributing to violence and destabilization of society. And who are the ones with weapons, guns Duke? Anybody, from average criminals, to warlords and their crew (like Qanyares) or to resistance fighters against the Ethiopian presence, basically anybody, there are tons and tons of millions of light weapons in Somalia thank the cold war and the black market! And because their hasn’t been a clear mandate addressing the collection and destruction of weapons nor any adequate resources given to disarmament operations, there cant be no peace and this TFG or any other enitity in Somalia is doomed to fail. That is just a little history lesson.

^^^Xiin seems to be coming out of the cold, which is a wonderfull development.

Khalaf, the al-shabaab clowns claimed responsability for these attacks.

Mr Macalin Xashi a former tool of Musa Sudi tunred court also claimed from Asmara they would attack the delegates.

Sharif Ahmed and Xasan Dahir call for violence on a daily basis. Masking it as "things wont change and so on.

The courts are being made out to be something they are not Their militia were part of those who used to fight in Mogadishu throughout the 16 years. Indacade, Abukar Cadaan, AYROW [who dug up the graves of the Italians] had fighters who took such actions.

Thus one should not call these groups "wadaads" what wadaad would have done what Xasan Dahir, IndaCade and the clowns in Asmara did?

Duke Adeer its not important what people call themselves or what other's believe about them. Somalia haraan oo dhaan ba isku timiid....and its my opinion that nothin or group in sight will either benfit the nation or the people, but the opposite effect.

But anyway lets just work with whats on the ground instead of the titles. I raised points above about weapons which are obstacles to peace, and which this government is not giving any priorty addressing. This includes the weapons of the warlords (rather independent from the government) btw. Why is that so? And two you do underestimate the opposition, weather miltarly or politically against the TFG.

^^^Adeer you dont want to use titles yet previously you stated that how does one know its the courts? Thus I tell you its important what one claims, what position one holds. These groups what ever title they use were the deadliest militia in Mogadishu and Somalia.

They are not religious nor nationalist.

As for the weapons, most weapons have been handed over and those hidden is being tracked, if one is honest these groups back has been broken hence the small mortars and hand grenades rather than the heavy wepaons they used to show off with.

Also I will like to highlight a difference of stances which has become obviosu between you and I. One I belive this is a temporary stage a transition as the police, army and security apparatus gets on its feet. The security situation will no doubt improve.

Hence there will be no perfect peace and there is none in the whole world even in the US there are grave crimes that take place.

Hence the TFG has more grip on Mogadishu today than they did yesterday.

There really isn't any logical fallacy, Xiin. It's not too complicated, unless of course, political correctness(violence is ceeb) forces our hand. The message is simple: Stand with the Ethiopian occupiers and you, 'brother' quisling, should also bring you're kafan. It also makes strategic and tactical sense: you're destroying the plans of the dhabo-dhilifs and their Xabashi Masters.

Why shouldn't the resistance disrupt this fake farce of a conference. That's the question you should ask and answer. Why let the enemy walk free and unmolested in the Somali capital city ?

Other than that glaring error, the rest of your post is pretty much on-point. The Courts are indeed being out-played in the diplomatic front, but that's only to be expected. One cannot compete with a whore(man or woman) in submissive compliance to anything and everything that would further their political agenda.

It's all khayr. The good fight continues, regardless of momentary mistakes and temporary weakness.

Heh. Xaraan ku nax warlords, the TFG, and Ethiopia are a indivisble entity, part and parcel of each other. Let's not try to get politically correct all of a sudden.

The rest of Somalia tho roots for the 'deadliest milita'(Islamic Courts of Somalia) that has shaken the earth under clan tyrants all across Somalia.
