General Duke Posted March 4, 2007 Four Somali journalists sentenced for defamation (Reuters) 4 March 2007 HARGEISA - A Somaliland court sentenced four journalists on Sunday to jail terms ranging from two to two-and-a half years for defaming the country’s president and revoked the licence of the paper that employed them. Three of them had been detained since January while the fourth was sentenced in absentia. They worked for the local daily HAATUF and were accused of defaming Somaliland’s President Dahir Rayale Kahin. The regional court in Hargeisa also fined the newspaper 5 million Somaliland shillings and revoked its licence, drawing criticism from a rights groups accusing Somaliland of muzzling the press. The East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Network, a little-known group, said the journalists had not received a fair trial. It said the 5 million Somaliland shillings was equivalent to $800. ‘The international community needs to speak out on the conduct of justice in Somaliland,’ it said in a statement. ‘I call upon the government to lift the ban on HAATUF’s publication and allow the media to flourish as part of an ongoing democratisation process,’ it quoted its chairman Hassan Shire Shaikh as saying. Despite its relative stability compared to the rest of Somalia, so far the world has withheld recognition of Somaliland, preferring the old colonial borders to avoid opening a Pandora’s box of secession conflicts. General Duke Posted March 4, 2007 ^^^I agree, Riyaale is working his magic again..
Jacaylbaro Posted March 5, 2007 Dear world: Since when did you care about Somaliland! As I write this article, many news makers are copy pasting from Somaliland's media that four journalists have been sentenced for "insulting" the first lady. Despite this unhappy ending, I congratulate Somaliland's media for reaching this high level of controversy and I thank everyone helping Somaliland to finally reach the paramount of freedom of speech. Having that said, I like to focus on the most ironic scene of this sad catastrophe which no one has noticed. Have you wondered why the news of sentencing journalists in democratic Somaliland is mentioned in newspapers like al Khaleej from UAE, a country where all media is owned or controlled by the government? I also wonder since when did the world care about Somaliland? How dare they ask us to be fully democratic, free and respect human rights when the world does not respect the freedom and the human rights of Somaliland by denying its existence and quest for international recognition? Riyale has jailed four men; sure that is a sad development. However, what about putting 4 million people in the jail of being ignored and unrepresented? Somaliland has everything any nation has and more for quite number of years now. So, If you are journalist, we don’t want you to care about those in the small jail, I sure you it’s the same outside. At least now there are recognized internationally as the poor journalists! Finally I conclude this message advising the Somaliland government to cancel all elections, kill these four so called journalists, sell drugs to ships who cross the international Gulf of Aden, welcome terrorism and build centers for children sexual exploration. If we are not welcomed in the right world and got sentenced for nothing but being ourselves, lets move on to the other world where Osama bin laden and Israel will welcome us with open arms. Jaylaani Posted March 5, 2007 ^^^If there is a union between Somalia and Somaliland guess who is gonna lose the most? Think about that for a minute! Mogadishu and Hargeisa are more connected than you can imagine. If I were you, I wouldn't wish for such thing.

Naxar Nugaaleed Posted March 5, 2007 as for the witers, freedom comes with responsibility. Being a journalist does not mean a license for Character assassination.
A.J. Timacadeh Posted March 5, 2007 I think this issue is quite important in that it portrays the level of press censorship in somaliland. i havent heard the full story yet but if riyaale objected to what was being said about him he could have a case of 'libel' against the haatuf newspaper but this has gone in a different direction in that he seems to want say that nothing like this can be written about him. so the issue needs further clarification for us to understand exactly what the journalists were convicted off and how rightly or wrongly their conviction was.
