African Stateman and former Zambian President visits Hargeisa

Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, one of Africa's last surviving statemen who fought the colonial powers in the late 1950s and early 1960s, is currently on a 3 day visit in Hargeisa.

 

The former President of Zambia Dr. Kaunda is occupnied by a number of other African diplomats and businessmen. The delegation was welcomed by Somaliland's vice president Mr. Ahmed Yasin, the deputy mayor of Hargeisa and a number of Somaliland officials at Egal International Airport.

Hargeisa, 19 May 2005--Former Zambian President and one of the last surviving independence leaders of Africa Kenneth Kaunda arrived here today. He was warmly welcomed at Egal Airport by Somaliland's Vice President Ahmed Yusuf Yasin and a number of Ministers.

 

Also present to receive the veteran leader were crowds of Hargeisa people including women organizations, all waving green branches and chanting welcome songs to the highest-ranking African personality that visits Somaliland since it restored its sovereignty 14 years ago.

 

Kaunda attended a dinner held in his honor by the Vice President at Mansour Hotel. He is expected to meet President Dahir Riyale Kahin over dinner at the Presidential Palace tomorrow evening.

 

Sources close to the government said that President Kahin would present to Kaunda an old group photo of a number of veteran African leaders including Kaunda and the late Somaliland President Mohammed Ibrahim Egal.

 

Kaunda's visit, which has come in response to an invitation by President Kahin, is part of the government's efforts to explain Somaliland's issue to African leaders.

 

In a word to the Press, Kaunda said that he would make a statement after he meets the President on Friday.

very smart move of the somaliland government to send invitations to as many influencial ppl as possible to explain the seccesion. lets just hope kenneth kaunda and others wont fall for your traps. hopefully and undoubtedly the seccesionist camp will fail miserably, as is the trend since 2003. im longing for a united somalia ma garatay.

you know what ayoub, it does matter. it really does matter! this man is someone i respect, an african socialist who made zambia one of the most peaceful african countries in history! if hes naïve enough to swallow the hargeysa propaganda than ill make sure that i revise my perspective on him somewhat you know what i mean.

 

two weeks ago djibouti president ismaaciil cumar geele invited c/yussef (somali president) and c/musse (c/yussef president) to his inauguration ceremony. somaliland officials were not invited. isnt it logical that somaliland takes note of this action and revises its take on its friendship with djibouti. daahir riyaale i mean, we all know how the somaliland ppl hate djiboutis (and puntlands) policy to economically suck somaliland dry.
