President Faroole and Garoweonline are too much!!!

For 4 years all they did was engage in clan politics and orchestrated fake news. Garoweonline purposely had people in Garowe come out and participate in fake food riots. No where else in the State did it occur. They purposely allowed Eyl to open up shop and turned a blind eye, the allowed constant prison breaks. Now they are complaining when another website is claiming that the president son intimidates the media. I don't think they want to go down the route of making things a clan issue, Gaalkayo is fed up and barely recognizing the government. Puntlandpost which is the run by the same clan of the president has accused the presidents son of also taking their camera's away if he is pictured with his father.

 

They can't dedicate years to using the media to attack a government and now do this. These guys are burning a lot of bridges.

PRESS RELEASE | To CPJ, welcome to Somalia's dirty clan politics. You have lost neutrality and therefore our respect.

 

It is neither surprising nor shocking to see Somali websites engaged in dirty media campaigns motivated by clan politics or pure greed. However, it is quite disappointing to see a well-known international organization that claims to "protect" the rights of journalists worldwide take part of clan politics in Somalia.

 

 

This press release is in reference to a press release dated July 17, 2009, and issued by the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) under the title, " Journalist beaten in Puntland courtroom."

 

It seems CPJ published the press release with utter disregard to the truth or the facts on the ground. However, monitors in New York City found it easy to pen a few words to gain international attention as "defenders" of press freedom in a poor African country.

 

Seeking the truth is part of defending the press. CPJ should have researched the facts on the ground before publishing such a disreputable piece of work simply based on the writings and comments of a single news organization with hidden clan-based political agenda in Puntland region of Somalia. For starters, the sourced website is used by the sore losers who thrived in the corruption of yesteryear and are unsatisfied by genuine changes on the ground or the outcome of the 2009 democratic election in Puntland.

 

CPJ wrote: "In late June, Deputy Information Minister Abdishakur Mire Adan and the son of Puntland’s president, Mohamed Abdirahman Farole, told Horseed Media to remove a May 11 article posted on their Web site, according to the editor-in-chief of Horseed Media, Mahad Mussa."

 

It is very unfortunate that CPJ was misled or is intentionally misleading the world when it simply describes Mr. Mohamed Abdirahman, an Australian citizen, only as "the son of Puntland's president." This is a fact and only God can change it. But what about the other fact: that Mr. Mohamed is the founder and executive director of Radio Garowe, an independent radio station in Puntland? Further, Mr. Mohamed remains the editor-in-chief of GaroweOnline.com, one of Somalia's most well-known news portals. As such, Mr. Mohamed has been a well-known name on the Somali media scene years before his father, Dr. Abdirahman Mohamed "Farole," was elected the president of Puntland only six months ago.

 

It is worth mentioning that, as an independent journalist, Mr. Mohamed can interview anyone he deems newsworthy, including pirates. Garowe Online editors have welcomed international journalists to Puntland, including the New York Times' Jeffrey Gettleman and the BBC's Andrew Harding, both of whom published investigative reporting on piracy in Puntland. It seems hardly unbelievable that Mr. Mohamed would ask a small-time and relatively unknown website to "remove" an article when he is too busy with his professional career and family life.

 

To CPJ, welcome to Somalia's dirty clan politics. You have lost neutrality and therefore our respect. To the sore losers in Puntland politics, lies and filthy propaganda will not bring back the four years of corruption that nearly destroyed Puntland. Of all the articles Garoweonline use to write attacking the previous admin, when then sacked Minister Faroole criminal took over the Puntland Parliament, let pirates set up base in Eyl, orchastrated food riots only in Garowe and did everything to get power(whiched all happened the year of the election). Mohamed Faroole seems to be making way too many mistakes, he is a civilian and needs to act accordingly.

Instead of having his father arrest pirates, he interviews them instead!

What he needs to do is realize who his father is and that having the news website is a conflict of interests. He never leaves his father side, interviewing pirates is unacceptable if your father is the states leader. Claiming you are just doing your job as a reporter is not an excuse!

 

The President Son Mohamed A Faroole is claiming that he is too busy to ask horseednet to take down articles and that the website is lying. But President Faroole himself threated Amin Arts with legal action for a CARTOON he drew. If the President has enough time to address a cartoonist, I'm pretty sure his son can address Horseednet.

The people of autonomous region of Puntland State of Somalia, have long called for a new change for their state, after the elections in January 2009, many hoped the change that they have long awaited was at last on the way, while others questioned the capacity of the new administration to overcome the challenges a head.

 

In January 2009, President Abdirahman Mohamud Farole was elected by Puntland Parliament. This was the State’s third peaceful and transparent election followed by a smooth transition, by Gen.Adde Musse’s cabinet and it was a new beginning for Puntland.

 

Puntland media as well as the majority of the public are and still supporting the new administration, in hope for better future in Puntland with; good governance, transparency, press freedom, enhanced social and political development in the region.

 

However many people were surprised and outraged by a recent article published by Garowe online, a website owned and managed by Mohamed Farole (the son of Puntland’s President). The article under the title (CPJ embroiled in clan politics) stated that Puntland was engulfed in “…dirty clan politics…”, according to Mohamed Farole..

This article was a response by the son of Puntland’s President to defame the global media watchdog, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) who condemned the recent beating of a journalist working for Horseed Media in Puntland court room.

 

In a press release dated 17th of July 2009, The Committee to Protect Journalists condemned the attack on reporter Aweys Sheikh Nur by security guards during a court session in Bosaso, the commercial capital of Puntland.

 

The condemnation came as the Puntland Minister for Security Gen.Abdullahi Said Samatar told CPJ, that he will investigate the incident that took place in Bosaso district court, on Wednesday.

 

Garowe Online’s article by Mr.Mohamed Farole, the editor in chief of that website, openly attacked CPJ accusing them for what he calls, participating the ”dirty clan politics in Somalia”. Of course this was a cheap shot and an absurd idea, but nevertheless it was a clear attempt to mislead people from the main issue, in particular the concerns about violations against independent media in Puntland.

Mohamed Farole, the son of Puntland’s President, blamed CPJ for not searching for the facts on the ground, but lets talk about the facts on the ground.

 

The CPJ’s call for investigations to the beating of journalist in the court room, was balanced and professional.

 

Not only that but it was a needed support for all Somali journalists, who are operating in one of the most dangerous countries on the planet. They did an excellent job, by researching the facts, through contacting journalists on the scene and the authorities as well.

 

Mohamed Farole’s idea of dirt clan politics in Puntland, and welcoming the CPJ to that dirty game was out of topic, and simply nonsense.

The fact that the son of Puntland’s President claimed that clans in Puntland were engaged in dirty clan politics offended many people in Puntland, including the clans, who are unified and are enjoying their peace together, thus undermining the stability in the region.

 

If Mohamed Farole was a true journalist, he would have shown some kind of solidarity with his colleagues in Puntland, and would join the call to respect and support the freedom of the press in Puntland.

 

Surely he can do a lot to help the journalists in the region, that is if he wanted to do so!

Mohamed Farole is visible and present in almost every cabinet meeting of the Puntland administration, and he is usually part of the Puntland government delegations to abroad, along side his Father Dr.Abdirahman Farole, too bad that he is using his relations with the government to daunt other journalists who are serving their people.

 

It is surprising to see, how Puntland President’s son is also attempting to bully the international media bodies not to intervene or report, about the grave violations against journalists in Somalia.

 

But lets just go back to the point why Mohamed Farole was so upset about the CPJ’s press release, while he totally ignored other similar calls from other media watchdogs like Reporters without Borders, who also reported the incident in Bosaso court.

 

It is clear, that the President’ son was troubled by the CPJ’s mention, that he and other Puntland officials were intimidating the independent media in Puntland, not to report certain sensitive issues in Puntland, like the link between Puntland government and piracy off the coast of Somalia.

Mussa told CPJ the article was a follow-up to two stories written by the New York Times alleging links between the Puntland government and a pirate leader named Abshir Boyah. Horseed Media refused to take the article down. The media company has investigated links between the pirates and certain Puntland officials.

 

If the son of Puntland’s President is wary for international condemnations for his relations with Pirate leaders in Puntland, then he should take his distance from them.

Besides, it is illegal in Puntland constitution to threaten and blackmail the independent media and he oath to respect others who are doing their job.

 

Mohamed Farole would do a huge favor to Puntland and to it’s people if he could just think before he writes his inflammatory articles, if he ignores this advice, then he should also write similar articles in Somali language, so that the people in Puntland could get the chance to read and understand what he is spreading on the web in their own language.

Mr. Mahad Mussa Ahmed Kheir, who was identified and quoted by the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) as the editor-in-chief of Horseed Media, is the nephew of Deputy Interior Minister Kheir

So according to Garoweonline, the son and uncle of the Deputy Interior Minister Yusuf Ahmed Kheir wrote a fraudulent article? Why would they write an article that bashes the man their father and uncle work for? If anything it gives the Journalists getting beat up story way more credibility. Somalia: Puntland prosecutor says 'no pirates were released'

BOSSASO, Somalia July 19 (Garowe Online) - The senior prosecutor in the commercial capital of Somalia's semiautonomous State of Puntland has rejected as "media propaganda" that a group of pirates were released by a local court, Radio Garowe reports.

 

Dr. Ahmed Tarran, the top prosecutor in Puntland's commercial capital of Bossaso, personally called the independent station Radio Garowe to dismiss widespread rumors that pirates were released and reporters were attacked inside a Puntland courtroom.

 

"The four men who were released were not [even] accused of piracy," the prosecutor said, adding: "The men were accused of stealing cars but were released due to insufficient evidence."

 

He told Radio Garowe that reports of pirates being released and journalists being abused are "spread by people with unknown agenda," while urging local media to report the facts and to uphold media rules.

 

"People are allowed to sit in courtrooms and observe cases without incident," Dr. Tarran said.

 

Local news website Horseed Media published a July 15 report that one of its reporters was beaten by police officers inside the courtroom, while the sitting judge watched.

 

But Prosecutor Tarran said false reports and accusations against government officials are illegal in Puntland.

 

Horseed Media is owned and operated by the sons and nephews of Mr. Yusuf Ahmed Kheir, Puntland's current deputy interior minister.

 

Mr. Mahad Mussa Ahmed Kheir, who was identified and quoted by the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) as the editor-in-chief of Horseed Media, is the nephew of Deputy Interior Minister Kheir
