Prof. Ahmed Samater put one of rare lectures on Somali situation both in and outside Somalia. He also gave lot of ideas about how to improve the lives of Somali community in UK and the contributions that the Somali community in diaspora can make to our homeland Somalia. The only problem was the venue, which was a mosque and the organisers (Hiraal magazine) who lack wisdom.

 

The Prof. admitted he was Secularist, which explains the few sentences that spoiled the brilliant lecture. I don't agree with him with his position on religion but I was totally with him almost everything else his lecture.

i thought everyone who know him,knows also he is not muslim cause he never hide it, and i heard from people who really know him that he was not raised as a muslim meaning he was never a muslim so actually he did not change his religion, but he should've respected his audience.

I’m assuming that these people know him now when he got lost, and he gave them a made up history of his background, but didn’t know him back in the old days when he was raised by his none other than highly respected uncle (maternal) called Xoogsade, who lives in Diri Dawa. This man raised him as a muslim just like he did raise his sons (who became pillars of their society). It’s only sad how his hard work on his nephew went to waste. Also he and his brother trash the tribe of their uncle (and mother) every opportunity they get, how disrespectful (biting the hand that fed them).

 

This Samatar guy, his people hate him the most, but I see that the Somaliweyn camp will invite anyone to speak in the house of Allah at all cost as long as he’s preaching their massage, how sad indeed.

Prof. Samater said almost everything in the article. It seemed to me at the time he was too relaxed about his religious beliefs which none of us contemplated before. He praised early Islamic culture, arts, philosophy and Civilization in general. He also said he was ready to have discussion about existence of live after death with anyone in public.

I don't know what he said in other lectures but this one he praised his reer abti for giving him the good work ethos. He modeled Gabilay where his uncles raised him as excellent example of how Somali people can work together as "Tol" (which he explained as society consisting on everyone who lives the town). He even told us the name of the tribe that his mother from. He said mosque was the pillar of that society and after Friday prayer the entire town would gather to discuss pressing issues. He discouraged "Qabiil", which he described as ego men descended from one grandfather. He also praised former PM of Somalia Abdirisak H. Hussien for his good bureaucratic ability when he employed un-proportional number of skilled civil servants from northern Somalia in his government despite huge resistant from southern politicians. Any moment during his lecture I haven’t felt he disrespected his mother or uncles.

 

This Samatar guy, his people hate him the most, but I see that the Somaliweyn camp will invite anyone to speak in the house of Allah at all cost as long as he’s preaching their massage, how sad indeed.

He didn't preach Somaliweyn but he preached working together Somalis in Diaspora despite their backgrounds and I think that was positive message. Since early 1990s Somalis of all views were invited to this mosque for the benefit of the Somali community in UK. I have seen many Somali intellectuals who would never attend a mosque let alone pray in it come and join the masses when the found out how civilized were the people who invited them and their audience. The difference this time was the organisers were different and didn't know the procedure of inviting someone to give a lecture in the mosque. Normally if the lecture is too sensitive the venue will probably be outside the mosque.

 

I think the magazine that organised the lecture needed attention, know they got it but maybe wrong one.

I was at both lectures. The previous one was brilliant and on the second one I could not agree more with brother Saxardiid on how he has summarized the event.

The Speaker for the Hiraal group sounded arrogant to me. I could not believe how he did not thank the audience properly but started being rude to them in telling them that this lecture was for young Somalian University Students whom for either my poor observation or the reality I have only spotted few. I have not seen a single advert or announcement for the lecture on anywhere so I was wondering whether Hiraal group managed to email or text all the young Somalian University Students around UK and how? I heard that this was how they got their message spread around although it has reached me via word of a mouth.

The professor did thank the audience though and praised them for their patience during the lecture.

For those of you who would be interested in to watch the lectures, it was recorded on video and I think it should be available. Forgive me that I can't tell you from where but others might do. My apologies to the admin, in case I am breaking your policy towards advertisement over here.

For your info, I don't consider 'Somalism' as bad as 'atheism', the point I was trying to make to make is; the people who invited Samatar inside a MASJID thought he would only talk about 'Somalism' and not about the dubious aspects of his beliefs. We may disagree on this but, I don't think a Masjid is a ideal place to discuss this sort 'somalism' politics whether people like Samatar are involved or not. Doing wrongs is one thing, doing them in a Masjid is another, don't you think?

sxb the person who invited the prof. is good friend of mine and he is Islamist. When I asked whether he was aware the odd views of the prof. he told me he didn't but wasn't also apologetic about his choice. The host beliefs Islam is not defensive religion and can take all its critics. He also beliefs that early Muslims used mosques as places to have discussions, plan wars, even non believers used to come and see the prophet {PBUH}. The lecture didn't took place inside the mosque but an adjacent hall where Muslims us every think including weddings.

 

The guy repeated that he was Muslim and proud to be one. He also said that was going to china to give lectures about Islamic civilization. So I don't think he is atheist but he confessed he was secularist.
