Somalia: Islamist claims deserting soldiers join their fighters

 

Sheikh Mahmud Sheikh Ibrahim Suley, an official of the Union of Islamic Courts, has spoken of soldiers who deserted the government with their vehicle and weapons.

Sheikh Mahmud Sheikh Ibrahim Suley who held a press conference via telephone spoke about government soldiers who deserted their unit and joined the armed groups opposed to the government.

After the press conference, Suley spoke to Shabelle on how the soldiers with their vehicle joined their side.

“In fact, these were Somalis who had been forced or misled. But when they realized they were part of the enemy that was oppressing the Somali people and after they were contacted, they said they were ready to defend their religion and their country” He said

When asked about the number of soldiers who had joined them, Suley declined to elaborate.

Suley’s remark comes as three government soldiers with one armed vehicle have surrendered to the anti-Gov and Ethiopian troops fighters on Friday according to reliable sources.

Sources said that the defected soldiers were parts of the presidential palace’s body guard furthermore they gave in to the anti-Gov and Ethiopian troops fighters.

It’s yet unknown the motivation behind the soldier’s surrender to their opponent groups.

The soldiers were carrying with two guns including AK-47 and one machine-gun also it’s unknown where those soldiers and their gunship vehicle were taken to.

Knowingly it’s the first time that soldiers of government have undoubtedly surrendered to the groups fight against the government and Ethiopian troops in the capital.
