The forces of the transitional federal government in southern Somalia have arrested on Sunday a number of local traditional elders after they failed to bring the armed militias to the government.

Colonel Aden Mahamud Ibrahim, the chief commander of 1st army division of the interim government has ordered the arrest of ten local elders in Afmadow town of Lower Juba region in southern Somalia.

“The elders, including clan chiefs were taken into custody by the forces after they failed to comply with an order from the government 20 days before to bring in all the armed militiamen,” Mohamed Aden Suqar, a local independent journalist told Somalinet tonight.

Earlier, reports from the southern port city of Kismayo in Somalia say that the transitional government began recruiting local militias to join the national forces after trainings.

The army officials met some traditional and clan leaders in Lower Juba province in the presence of Ethiopian army officials over how they would convince the militias to join the forces in Kismayo, 500km south of the Somalia capital Mogadishu.

What is going on down there is despicable. First their livelihoods are bombed then you arrest the traditional leaders because they do not want to comply with those that they believe have helped the bombing of their people. The old men have legitimate concerns and arresting them goes against everything the spirit of reconciliation stands for.

I hope the rest of the people of Kismaayo and Jubaland as a whole do not sit back and watch the isolotion, marginalization, and embittering conduct shown towards that constiuency. It is a disgrace what is going on down there.

Duke-

Supporting the objectives of the TFG does not mean one has to make a policy of not only agreeing with but also defending that which cannot be defended.

No it doesn't. What the General is doing is referred to as toeing the line.

^^^All one sees is desperation by certain groups, no one is targeting any clan, otheriwse many would have been targeted in Mogadishu. As for this specific clan, is Xiddig not the one masterminding the hunt for Turki his own kisnmen? Dont trurn the thing into a clan waring, Kimsayu and Juba today is better than any time in the past..

Duke-

Forget the political opportunism around here, but do you seriously believe the constiuency of Afmadow/Dhoobley support the people they believe have a hand in their bombing? Do you seriously believe they would not cut and skin Barre Hiiraale, Abdirashid Xiddig, Abdulahi Yusuf, and any of their "collegues"?

^^^It matters not brother, what any group belive whats important is the fact that they are not being targeted. The TFG had little to dow ith the bombings, the way they handeld the situation was wrong, yet to say there is targeting is baseless.

Afmadow/Dhobley clansmen are even targetted in muqdisho. First day Ethiopians settled in Muqdisho seaport a man who was born, raised, and educated in Muqdisho and who worked in the port was arrested after someone accused him of being ONLF. Last week they killed two men who were teaing in Bakaaraha Market. The clan militias who murdered them knew the teashop was owned and frequented by these somalis who hail from sayid mohamed's clansmen. They are targetted everywhere opportunist somalis who shine Ethiopian boots rule, exported and tortured by the planeload whenever the opportunity presented itself to these stooges in clanfiefdoms. Waa qabiilka kaliya oo waddinayada daacad ka tahay iyo soomaaliya jeceelkeeda.

Barre Hiiraale never bothered these people even though they had disagreements with him from time to time. Each kept to their domain.

NaxarNugaaleed.

You and Duke epitomize what is wrong with the TFG and its supporters.

The question is, can the TFG defeat the "terrorist and Dowladiid"? Unlikely.
