Thinkerman Posted December 12, 2003 Kenyan Muslims protest US aid camps Many Muslims feel the war against terror is aimed at fighting Islam Hundreds of protesters in north-east Kenya have taken part in a demonstration against a free medical camp being run by American marines. Some of the protesters, most of whom were ethnic Somalis, threw stones at the hotel housing the Americans in the town of Garissa. Muslim residents suspect the camp is part of a ploy to extend the US war against terror in the region. Garrissa borders war-torn Somalia, which the US alleges hosts terrorist cells. BBC reporter Bashkash Jugsuday in Garrisa says several people were injured when Kenyan police repulsed the protestors. Mr Jugsuday told the BBC's Focus on Africa programme that Islamic religious leaders are opposed to the free medical camp. However, many residents have turned up for treatment since it was opened to the public three days ago. The protestors set road blocks on fire as they engaged policemen in running battles.
