Foreign Minister Ali Ahmed Jama of the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia said today that, with African leaders headed to New York for a high-profile Security Council summit this week, the time was right for meaningful steps to lay out a broad security strategy to help bring lasting peace to the war-torn country, including by mandating a multinational peacekeeping force. Foreign Minister Ali Ahmed Jama of the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia called for the international community to intervene in his war torn country, including the mandate of a multinational peacekeeping force.

Speaking at a press conference today at headquarters in New York ahead of the arrival tomorrow of Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, he said that the security situation in Somalia carries “grave implications” for the region and for the world as a whole.

Pointing out the global character of today’s conflicts he said that “many of the tactics that we see in Somalia have been imported from Iraq.”

Mr. Jama declared that while the Government was working very hard to contain problems, it needed international assistance to ensure lasting peace.

He said that the time was right for UN engagement and that “we will be persistent in asking the United Nations to show that it is its responsibility under the charter in maintenance of peace and security.”

President Ahmed is expected to be among the leaders attending the high level Security Council meeting on Wednesday to discuss ways to boost security cooperation between the United Nations and the African Union.
