Saalax Posted November 22, 2010 Ethiopian refugees in Bosaso, the commercial center of Somalia’s semi-autonomous state of Puntland, have developed a new business from spoon, forks and old clothes. They have started exchanging utensils for old clothes. Guled Abdulkadir, one of the businessmen, told All Headline News by telephone that they developed this amazing business about one year ago. “Local residents go to Ethiopians’ small stalls in the town carrying a lot of old clothes, to change it for utensils,” Abdularkadir revealed, saying this new trade has spread not only throughout Bosaso but small villages in Puntland. Abdulkadir spelled out that they combine a lot of old clothes and then load trucks going to Ethiopia. He added there is a back-door purpose behind this new marvelous trade. “Ethiopian big businessmen are pushing back this business. They have cloth factories and want to refurbish and renovate old clothes and then resell it with high expensive price,” he said. Farhia Farah, a woman in the town of Garowe, said Ethiopians walk through the streets all day and residents give them old clothes. In turn, the Ethiopians provide cups and saucers, spoons, dishes and other kitchen materials. The new industry isn't popular with everyone, however Small businessmen in the region express a deep concern about the refugees, saying the new business tactics may paralyze their own small businesses.
