Twin blasts in Uganda capital Kampala 'kill 23 people'

Recommended Posts

At least 23 people have been killed in twin explosions in the Ugandan capital Kampala, police said.

It is not known what caused the blasts, which police said went off at a rugby club and at a restaurant, as football fans watched the World Cup final.

"These bombs were definitely targeting World Cup crowds," Inspector General of Police Kal Kayihura told AFP.

Somali militants have in the past threatened to attack Kampala; Ugandan troops are deployed in Mogadishu.

Mr Kayihura told AP news agency he believed Somalia's militant group al-Shabab could be behind the attack.

"The information we have indicates 13 people have died here at the Ethiopian Village [restaurant] and many others are injured and more than 10 people are reported to have died at the rugby club," Mr Kayihura told Reuters news agency at the scene of one blast.

About 5,000 African Union troops from Uganda and Burundi are based in the Somali capital Mogadishu to protect the fragile interim government.

The Amisom force is engaged in frequent firefights with Islamist insurgents which control much of southern and central Somalia.

KAMPALA, Uganda — Bombs exploded at two sites in Uganda's capital late Sunday as people watched the World Cup final on TV, and officials at the scene put the death toll at more than 20 and said it could rise further.

Police Chief Kale Kaihura said he believed that Somalia's most feared militia – al-Shabab, which has pledged loyalty to al-Qaida – could be behind the attacks. One of the bombs went off at an Ethiopian restaurant in Kampala, Uganda's capital. Al-Shabab views Ethiopia as an enemy. The second blast went off at a restaurant called the Kyadondo Rugby Club.

A police officer at the scene of the blasts said he believed more than 20 people had been killed. He said he could not be named, and Kaihura declined to confirm a death toll. An AP reporter at the two scenes estimated that the toll would be more than 20.

At the scenes of the two blasts chairs were overturned. Blood and pieces of flesh littered the floor.

Uganda bombings kill 64 watching World Cup

Group tied to al-Qaida is suspected by police; 1 American among dead

KAMPALA, Uganda — Bombs exploded at two sites in Uganda's capital late Sunday as people watched the World Cup final on TV, killing 64 people.

One American was killed and at least three others — part of a church group from Pennsylvania — were among the wounded.

Police Chief Kale Kaihura said he believed that Somalia's most feared militia — al-Shabab, which has pledged loyalty to al-Qaida — could be behind the attacks.

One of the bombs went off at an Ethiopian restaurant in Kampala, Uganda's capital. Al-Shabab views Ethiopia as an enemy. The second blast went off at a restaurant called the Kyadondo Rugby Club.

Kaihura said 14 people were killed at the restaurant, and that he believed the toll at the Rugby Club was far higher than 14, though he did not have an exact number.

At the scenes of the two blasts chairs were overturned. Blood and pieces of flesh littered the floor.

Among the wounded was Kris Sledge, 18, who said a group of six Americans had been watching the World Cup at the Ethiopian restaurant. Sledge, of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, had been part of a church group in the country for three weeks. They were supposed to leave Uganda on Tuesday. Three Americans in his group were wounded.

Thankful

Al Shabaab are the prime suspects, because they said they would take their war to uganda and burundi! Plus, they have used this type of cowardly tactic in Somalia.

It could be anyone, but their comments in past puts them at the top of the list of potential suspects.

Very Sad Indeed ..............

Bomb explosions that tore through two bars in the Ugandan capital at the weekend left at least 64 people dead and wounded 65 others, a national police spokeswoman said Monday.

This will be serious political miscalculation if Al-Shabaab is implicated. They are already being blamed though there's no concrete evidence of their involvement.
