US urges Somali factions to finish transition

Just two days after the United States President Barack Obama was sworn in, the US is urging the stakeholders in the Somali government to continue the cooperation aimed at completing the transition within the appointed time frame.

 

A statement from the US Embassy says that the US is committed to supporting the Somali Parliament to complete the presidential succession process within the thirty-day period as outlined in the Transitional Federal Charter.

 

Somali Transitional Federal Government First Deputy Speaker Mohammed Omar and Member of Parliament Ahmed Ashare, who is also the Chairman Parliamentary Committee on Information, Culture, Public Awareness and Heritage, welcomed the commitment saying it would go a long way in supporting the transitional government meet the set deadline.

 

Somalia has been without an effective central government since President Siad Barre was overthrown in 1991 sparking a wave of inter clan wars.

 

The two leaders lauded US President Barack Obama’s inaugural speech, especially where he condemned graft.

 

Said Mr Omar: “The commitment solidifies the forward progressive way which will enhance the establishment of multiparty system and fair elections slated for September”.

 

Speaking to the Nation in Nairobi, Mr Ashare said that the message from the US was an indication that the Obama presidency would promote democracy.

 

“It also shows that the new US president is interested in seeing Somalia embrace democracy and it also acts as a catalyst for stability in our country,” said Mr Ashare.

“Since President Yusuf’s resignation last year, we have consistently advocated a peaceful and transparent election of a new president while respecting the progress made in the Djibouti process,” said the statement from the US Embassy.

 

Late last year, Mr Adan Muhammad Nur became acting president after Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed stepped down from the presidency.

 

The constitution requires that the speaker of parliament takes the post of the president in an acting position until elections are held.

Sharif is yaab. One day he talks and you are impressed and pleased and the next day he talks and your enemy is impressed and pleased.

 

The Mujahiden haven't changed their stance no matter how weak they were or no matter the situation. All of the Mujahideen forces have stated that they will continue to kick out the foreign forces. In addition, some of the tribes in Mogadishu have also stated on the radio that the Jihad will continue, like Mursade and Duduble.

 

Sharif can't be trusted and has went from calling for war and fighting against foreign forces to requesting and welcoming foreign forces. Allahu Caclam.

Xiin, as long as the reconciliation process involves the members of the now defunct TFG, the warlord parliament appointed in Doofareey and tribal entrepreneurs we are doomed yet again for another failure.

 

What somalia needs -if there is to be a long term solution- is radical changes not incremental changes where the status quo is maintained. Having the doofareey appointed thugs, the warlords and a few disgruntled elements from IUC will not solve our problems.

 

We need to break with the past. So called peace processes- we are not short of that- are almost exclusively based on reaffirming the importance of heinous tribalism in our society.

 

We need a new mindset; there is life outside politics!

Mogadishu, Somalia (HOL) - Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed who is the leader of the Alliance for the Re-liberation of Somalia (ARS) and of a presidential candidate has spoken about the need for peaceful co-existence with Somalia’s neighbours

 

Sheik Sharif who is seen as a moderate Islamist by the world community told Reuters News Agency that he is prepared to talk to groups that are fighting in Somalia.

 

“We need to bring clarity and peaceful settlement to the conflict between Ethiopia and Somalia which has been dragging for a long time” said Sheik Sharif. He added that a peaceful settlement of the conflict between Ethiopia and Somalia will help in tackling the poverty the people in the region suffer from.

 

Sheik Sharif also talked about the killings and fighting that still continue in Somalia and said that there is no need to continue fighting and that it is time to bring peace to Somalia and look after the interest of the Somali people.

 

“Resistance forces wanted to get Ethiopia out of Somalia and they have succeeded in doing so therefore it is unnecessary to spill the blood of more Somalis” said Sheik Shariif who added he is willing to talk to those with proposals to end the conflict in Somalia and that he will also talk to those with whom he may have religious differences.

 

Talking about the Al-Shabab forces which the US added to its terrorist list, he said that he will talk to Al-Shabab in an effort to advance the interests of Somalis

 

At the end he discussed the hopes of forming a unity government in Djibouti and said that he is very hopeful that a unity government will be formed in Djibouti and warned against those who will destroy Somalia and Somalis for their own short-term self-interest.

At least Sh. Sharif is saying the right things, let us hope he will be able to pacify Mogadishu and entice the shabaab to moderate and join him . IF this happens, then we may get an effective government for the first time in 18 years, IA.
