WSJ Report: Somali Militant Group Built Training Camp..

Recommended Posts

On Wednesday, armed al Shabaab fighters drove through towns in southern Somalia, blaring a warning to residents through megaphones mounted on their vehicles, according to witnesses contacted by telephone. "You must collaborate with [us] and allow your sons to fight the enemy of Allah," Abu Maryama, a senior al Shabaab official told crowds in the southwestern town of Baidoa. "If you pay no heed to this …you will be considered as another enemy and face punishment."

Wax u dagaalamo ee weysanyihiin, hence waa markee bilaabi jireen xoog inay dadka dagaaladooda ku giliyaan. Tabar la'aan iyo dhaqaalo la'aan ayaa heyso.

JB, the temp solution could be how to drain the swamp. Somalia is a country long neglected by the International community. Compare that to how Ethiopia was saved from ethnic wars.

Weak States and Ethnic Conflict: Secessionism and State Collapse

By Prof. Ray Taras & Rajat Ganguly

..While Soviet efforts to prop up the Dergue in the 1970s and 1980s are well known, it is surprising to learn the pivotal role played by the United States
in engineering the downfall of Mengistu, his replacement by Meles, and the change in political status of Eritrea.
In the last days of war in May 1991, the United States announced for the first time that it would support Eritrea's right to self-determination. With the sudden collapse of Africa's largest army , the Ethiopian communist government forces, in April 1991---due primarily to the withdrawal of political and military support for it by the Soviet Union---the United States entered into secret diplomacy with Mengistu.

To begin with.....In May 1991, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Herman Cohen, chaired a peace conference of contending Ethiopian forces in London. He sought to ensure an orderly transition process involving both the removal of Mengistu and the secession to Eritrea, consistent with the facts on the ground.
Once Mengistu had safely departed the country for exile in Zimbabwe, the United States next tried to create conditions for a peaceful takeover by the Tigre rebels.
Efforts were made to ensure the Amharas in Addis Ababa that the Tigre forces entering the city on May 28 would do them no harm. Accordingly an American statement was broadcast announcing that Tigre rebels would be entering Addis Ababa the next day with Washington approval. In addition, U.S. envoys secretly asked Eritrean rebel leaders to hold back on their announcement of a referendum on the region's independence, in this way postponing the dramatic news that Ethiopia was to be partitioned....

The US and the whole international community tried to persuade our former dictator/regime to negotiotate with SNM throughout the whole '80's.

He has refused because the regime in contrary to the Ethiopian regime thaught its own survival more important that the peace in the country.

Again they had to interfene with Abdiqasim Salat and Abdullahi Yusuf for peacefull transfer, both have refused and fought till the end. And then it was already too late.

So you cannot say international community has neglected Somalia. They are fed up with Somalia.

Nassir, Ethiopia has always been saved by the Christian powers through out the history. Greece saved them from the advancement of Ahmed Gurey, the Soviet Union saved them from Somalia during 1977 and so on.

I was not surprised to read that it was America and the other western countries who saved Ethiopia "again" from a civil war. Some reports suggest that even Mingestu did not leave by his own choice but was abducted by CIA agents in Addis and took him by a helicopter to force him leave the country at that crucial moment.

Somalia on the contrary has been seen as a threat to the western's interest in the region during Siad Barre's time specially after the war with Ethiopia in 1977/78. The Somali leaders failed to bring a valuable political platform that can convince the International community to support the country and start a new page for a new Somalia at least after the collapse of Siad Barre's government. Instead they turned to be war mongers and each one created his own group killing his own people.

Alshabaab is just part of those groups. The only difference is those groups tried every excuse to kill. Clan is used to be the main excuse along with other excuses. Now Alshabab are here to use the Islam for a better excuse to murder civilians and kill their own people.
