Somalia: Three Government Soldiers Due to Be Executed Escape

Three government soldiers, who were supposed to be executed at a square in former army training academy in south of Mogadishu, have escaped.

 

Somali deputy defense minister, Salad Ali Jelle, has told the press in Mogadishu on Saturday that the three men were government soldiers who were sentenced to death by the government's martial court after they were charged that they killed three government soldiers.

 

Jelle said the criminals escaped while they were supposed to be executed. "They were not shackled tightly enough, so they got the chance to escape. We, however, wounded one of them and we have him in custody now," he said, accusing the officers, escorting the three men of being responsible for their escape.

 

He said, "We will hold those officers accountable for the recklessness and the escape of the criminals," he said.

 

Jelle stated that the government previously executed soldiers who killed other soldiers in Baidoa, a temporary base for the transitional government. "But this is the first time that people, who were sentenced to death by martial court escaped. We are trucking them down and justice will be served," he said.

Typical TFG incompetence. They couldn't change a light bulb between themselves. But, why are being executed? I don't agree with the death penalty. It's wrong and has no place in a democractic society. Anyway, they should be given their day in court. A moratium should be held on the death penalty issue at the moment till further notice.

Those that are trying to execute people today will be executed tomorrow, just like saddam. The man executed thousands of innocent people and he ended up being executed. What goes around comes around.
