raadamiir Posted April 13, 2007 (SomaliNet) The African Union peacekeepers from Uganda began Thursday providing health services in the Somalia capital Mogadishu free of charge. They have installed a medical center in Mogadishu where hundreds of Somali patients have been treated so far. Captain Paddy Ankunda, the spokesman for the AU peacekeeping mission in Somalia told the local media that Ugandan forces set up a health center for the victims of the fighting in the capital. He said 1,380 people have benefited from the health service they had provided. “Of the total number, 475 were children,” “This is part of the humanitarian mission we are doing here because we want to help Somalia in terms of peace and health,” said Captain Ankunda. “we will continue to aid Somalis as long as we are in this country, we came here not only for peacekeeping but providing humanitarian assistance as well,” Earlier, the Ugandan peacekeepers stationed in Mogadishu distributed clean water to hundreds of displaced families who made makeshift homes in the southern outskirts of the capital. He asked the international relief agencies to help the health project with medicine so as to sustain the free service supporting the people of Somalia. Uganda has 1,200 soldiers in Somalia for peacekeeping mission. They are the first AU batch to be deployed in the country late February.
