The Governor of Awdal issues an appeal for the affected areas in the region

Borama (QARAN)- The Governor of Awdal, Mudane Mohamud Sheikh Abdillahi has made an appeal to the Somaliland government for urgent assistance to the local residents severely affected by heavy rains in the region.

 

At a press conference held at Rays Hotel in Borama, Mudane Mohamed Sheikh Abdillahi along with a delegation, consisting of Somaliland Representatives and co-ordinators, recently back from the affected areas gave a briefing on the situation.

 

In his news conference, the Governor confirmed that at least four people included three women and one man have lost their lives as a result of the severe weather, along with an estimated loss 33,000 heads of livestock, mainly sheep, as well as, the local wildlife.

 

Also speaking at the press conference was Mudane Ahmed Barkhad Obsiye, member of the Somaliland House of Representatives who spoke of the critical situation which having a profound affect in the region in terms of the social, economic, and environmental situation.

 

According to the Mudane Obsiye, the residents of the area have been forced to leave their homes in search of shelter, food and medicine, and he also mentioned giving assistance to people on the road towards to town of Dilla. Mudane Obsiye called on the Somaliland government to mobilise an urgent appeal to both international and national organisation in order to provide relief to residents of the affected area.

 

The local delegation to the affected areas spoke of a dire situation in which about 14 people are suffering from psychological problems brought about by the conditions on the ground, and the lack of assistance.

 

The Governor of Awdal, Mudane Mohamud Sheikh Abdillahi confirmed that an emergency committee has been set up to co-ordinate the relief programme for the area, and he also encouraged the people of Somaliland both at home and abroad to come to the aid of the residents of the affected areas.

 

The severe weather in the region which occurred in the area between Burmadow and Buurcad, has had an adverse effect on the mainly rural residents and their livestock.

 

The most severely affected villages are Geerisa, Farsaxidhka, Fadhi Xun, Weeraar, Caroweyne, Garbodadar, Waraqadhigta, C/Xaydh, Gargaari Bari, and the areas around Seemaal, Baki and Cadaad.

Disaster Relief for Awdal Areas Affected by Hailstorms

 

 

Unusually heavy rains and hailstorms in the Awdal region have caused loss of human life, injuries, and the death of approximately 33,000 livestock, mostly sheep and goats. The areas most affected include the districts of Baki, Saylac and Lughaya. Many families have lost their entire livestock and are on the verge of becoming destitute.

Borama(The Rep) Four people died, hundreds were displaced and thousands of livestock (mostly sheep and goats) were killed by heavy rain with hail, in the districts of Borama and Baki, in the western region of Awdal in the last three days.

Baki district authorities estimate that more than 40 thousand livestock killed by the annual rain in the coastal area – although the extreme cold has not been seen in recent years.

 

The mayor of Baki, Mr. Barre Jama Yuusuf told the media: "Many houses have been destroyed and the people, who remained in the areas hit by the heavy rains, are looking after what remained of their livestock (sheeps and goats)."

 

He added, "Many people were shocked to see most of their livestock to have died of the extreme cold."

 

Deputy Chairman of Borama district, Mr. Mumin Jibriil Omer told the international media that more than 20 thousands sheep and 15 camels have from the heavy rain with hail and extreme cold in 5 villages."

 

Officials in both districts appealed for emergency aid and regional authorities have sent teams to assess the damage.
