Christmas gifts and celebration

Recommended Posts

Asalamu calaykum sh. Nur I am in a bit of a pickle and I could not find anything related to my issue on the net. marka hadii aad wax igu kordhin kartid iyo haduu jiro qof arintaan oo kale haysato inuu ku faa'idaysto.

As you can guess from the title it is related to this season and the whole gift exchange thing.

The last month we have had non stop Christmas parties at work and I have received gifts many times usually they are small inconsequential things like chocolate or cards .... but this season things have changed.

I was promoted a few months back .. and besides the technical nature of my work I am now expected to 'cultivate' clients ... loosely meaning take them out for dinner which includes drinking... for this we have an 'entertainment budget' that you are not supposed to fall short of .. I have been able to avoid it all together by making excuses and with the help of a coworker who takes them off my hands in some cases.

The problem I have with the 'entertainment' is .. although the money being spent is not mine ... the card has my name on it and I have to sign off on the expenses. another problem I have with the company card is ever since I received it .. I keep getting calls from my bank .. they informed me that I got a big bump in credit ratings because of the company card .. which means I did get some benefit from it .. although indirectly.

A few days ago ..when I came into my office there was a huge basket with chocolates, cheese and an expensive bottle of wine from a client that was happy with the work we did for him ... my boss knows I do not drink and when he heard I was planning to return it .. he asked me not to and that it would give a bad impression but next year .. that he would tell them not to send wine.

My friend who helped me avoid the entertainment problem many times asked me to give it to him (he is Muslim .. well Ismaili anyway)... so here is my problem ... I do not want to give it to anybody and be responsible for their drinking .. my first idea was to flush it down the toilet.

but that would be shooting my self in the foot for future entertainment outings ... bal talo keen sh nur ?

qorshaha way iigu jirtaa wadankaan inaan iskaga tago ... lakin inta laga gaadhayo wakhtigaas howlahaan sidaan u maarayn lahaa ayaan ku wareersanahay.

GJ- Although Nur would be a better judge than I. I don't think you need to worry too much, for one the payment for the entertainment is deducted from the firm's budget and 2nd if it really bothers you, see if your firm could set up an account with a particular restaurant, set them up as a supplier with an open invoice payment.

About the gift, take the drink home and dispose of it and keep the rest.

Nur

Geel Jire brother.

I have been to a similar situation like yours, not once but several times, each time that I faced a questionable situation, I consoled myself that I will handle it with wisdom, however each time, a different tilt of the Haraam things popped up from nowhere to my dismay. I finally gave up trying to find ways to reconcile between adhering to the tenets of my faith and my efforts for earning a living as I realized the limitation of the sphere of my influence.

My advice is that you look for a job description that does not expose you to questionable situations.

Nur
