Abdirahman Farole, president of Puntland, has been in the news as usual for his egregious violations of fundamental human rights against his native Puntlanders but above all for his abominable crimes against innocent ******i residents in his midst. Under his watch, several have been snatched, imprisoned, bundled together and handed over to Ethiopia security agents as sacrificial lamps to oblige and indulge his master in Addis Ababa. These wretched ******i have been forced to flee their homes in the ****** (Somali regional State) in order to escape Meles Zenawi’s barbaric and merciless scorched earth policy in their territory. In coming to Puntland, where they thought they would be save, they were following time-honoured practice since Somalia’s independence in 1960 whereby any Somali, no matter where he or she hails from outside Somalia, and irrespective of the circumstances they face, would come to the free motherland and be immediately granted and assured equal rights with any other Somali including automatic Somali citizenship.

 

If Somalia of the past had any common denominator with any other country in the world, it is none other than Israel. Just as the Jews from anywhere in the world have automatic right to come to Israel and settle if they so wish, so anyone of Somali origin from neighboring Somali territories whether independent or otherwise, or from anywhere else in the world, could come and freely live in Somalia with no questions asked. Unfortunately, things ain’t what they used to be in the present-day stateless Somalia, where patriotism and Somali solidarity are moribund, and where warlords, federal puppets masquerading as heads of a defunct state, and the likes of Farole and Dahir Rayale run their own fiefdoms under foreign protection or Ethiopian guidance.

 

One of the casualties of the collapse of the Somali state is the demise of that long-standing common Somali heritage, entitling any Somali to come and live in mother Somalia and acquire immediate citizenship if so wished. It has been shamelessly dishonoured by Somaliland and Puntland and for what price? Somaliland under, Dahir Rayale, believes that no price is high enough for securing recognition from Ethiopia. From their perspective, feeding hapless ******i to the Ethiopian dragon is a small price to pay for their high-prized goal. What is sad is that this illegal, immoral and heinous crimes committed in the name of Somaliland’s illusory recognition rarely ever raise eyebrows, let alone objections, among those who call themselves Somalilanders at home or among the Diaspora. No people in Somalia have been more vociferous as they have been about the abuses committed against them by Siyad Barre but it is another matter when it comes to what they are doing to others, whether the ******i or the Sool, Sanag & Cayn people they now occupy and oppress.

 

The same mentality of collusion with Ethiopia also prevails among Puntlanders at every level of the administration (Sool, Sanag and Cayn regions are nominally part of Puntland but do not subscribe to, nor condone, this shameful practice). To the best of my knowledge, no critical voices against these shocking crimes against the ******i residents have been raised by Puntlanders inside or outside the area. On the contrary, the reverse has been the case judging by press releases and articles appearing in WardheerNews. Thus, the Minneapolis- based Puntland Diaspora Forum (PDF) has challenged US Congressman Donald Payne’s commendable statement on the flagrant abuses of human rights in Puntland (“Abusive behaviour in Puntland”) and scalded him for what they call his “hastily drafted criticism based largely on unsubstantiated allegations…”. Their star witness for refuting these “unsubstantiated allegations” is the very same Puntland authority which is in the dock for these crimes. PDF claim disingenuously that they have been “assured by senior cabinet level officials that no one was in fact handed over to Ethiopia”. What else did PDF expect to hear from the culprits other than denial? It reflects badly on their credibility that they made no effort to contact the victims’ families, or the ****** Diaspora in the area, or civil society organisations, or the countless other sources for independent reliable information that are available and accessible to anyone genuinely committed to get to the bottom of this matter.

 

Though its actions are abhorrent and unpardonable, yet Somaliland can at least claim to be pursuing the goal it set itself from the day it declared secession in 1991 and that is to secure recognition from Ethiopia and pay any prize. But what are Puntland and its leader Farole gaining from this slavish subservience to Addis Ababa? There is obviously nothing in it for the people of Puntland, but for him, grovelling to and gratifying Meles Zenawi might be a prudent insurance policy to guard against his wrath or to win his favours. This is reminiscent of the time of the slave trade when European slave traders coming to the West African coast would dangle glittering and worthless glass beads in front of beguiled African chiefs and bargain the capture of their fellow Africans from the hinterland which they eagerly obliged. Taking their cue from Meles Zenawi, what Abdirahman Farole and his soul mate Dahir Rayale are doing in the 21 century to their fellow ******i guests is no different ( Siyad Barre and the founding fathers of Somalia must be turning in their grave in horror).

 

The ****** liberation struggle will grind on for sometime. Meles Zenawi’s response has always been predictable. Like other beleaguered colonialists before him, he believes that the best way to defeat the indomitable and elusive ****** National Liberation Front (ONLF) is to inflict indiscriminate and unbearable collective punishment on their people in the hope that this would deny the insurgents the support and sustenance they need to wage their liberation struggle. What Meles Zenawi is doing as an Ethiopian imperialist is consistent with what his predecessors - Menelik, Haile Selassie and Mengestu Haile Mariam - have all done to the Somalis they subjugated in their empire for over a century. Denial of basic human rights and institutionalized militarised occupation and ill-treatment of the Somalis in the territory is the folklore that passed from one Somali generation to the next.

 

What is new and unpalatable is the fact that for the first time since its independence, Somalia has come a full circle from a proud, united independent country, respected and feared by its neighbours, and sworn to defending the rights of its brethren in other non- free Somali territories, to one where Ethiopia has now become the unchallenged overlord and arbiter of Somalia’s affairs, where its Bantustan partners -, Puntland and Somaliland - are its active collaborators in its oppression of the ****** people. In the absence of sympathy and support from the wider Somali public, and in the face of Somaliland and Puntland duplicitous collusion with the enemy, it is a consolation to the forlorn disowned ******i that at least outsiders like US Congress Donald Payne is on their side and ready to speak on their behalf. It behoves the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Independent Expert appointed by the UN Secretary General for the human rights situation in Somalia, as well as human rights defenders such as Human Rights Watch, to speak up against the on-going worst human rights abuses against the ****** people in their own territory and in Somalia. As for the Puntland Diaspora Forum (PDF), well, with so-called brothers like that, who needs enemies like Meles Zenawi?

Puntland Diaspora Forum: Injudicious Solidarity to Faroole`s Wrongdoings

 

The ****** American Community Association of USA supports the press release on November 20, 2009 by Honorable Congressman Donald Payne titled “Abusive behavior in Puntland.” The honorable Congressman D. Payne`s purpose was to end human rights violations against ****** civilians in Puntland. It is unfortunate that Mr. Faroole did not give any regards to numerous promises made to the Congressman and as diplomacy achieved nothing, the Congressman realized that the appropriate alternative is to inform Faroole`s insincere stance via press release before the public. ****** American Community is condemning the inhumane and abusive practice that Puntland administration continuously carrying out against innocent civilians from ****** by detaining, torturing, and handing them over to Addis Ababa regime. Furthermore, ****** American Community is saddened and shocked by the support Puntland Diaspora Forum is providing to an abusive regime of Puntland regardless of the facts. It is unfortunate that PDF is entirely basing their defense on Faroole`s leadership with information collected from abusers in Puntland rather than independent sources. The Puntland Diaspora Forum and Puntland Authority are both determined not to admit or bring to an end ongoing crime against innocent civilians from ******. There are media exposed cases that victims handed over to Ethiopia, while others died under the custody of Puntland, and yet others still held in the Puntland`s prison cells. This is a clear marked for the Puntland`s denial, and continuation of wrongdoing tactics towards ****** civilians in Puntland.

 

Normally, Diaspora communities living in democracies reject any form of violation and abuse behaviors in other parts of the world. In contrast, the Puntland Diaspora Forum is supporting Faroole`s ill-advised governance at any cost. By doing so, the PDF is losing the opportunity to amend the Puntland administration from wrongdoing. In reality, we have learned from human history whenever citizens of a country refuse to alter or advise tyrant rulers` transgressions against innocent civilians; we can only expect the destruction and downfall of such a nation to occur. Instead of taking steps to change the existing conditions in Puntland, the PDF had opted to provide support and speak up on the behalf of Puntland leaders who committed crimes against civilians who fled from the chaos and suppression in ****** and Southern Somalia.

 

Here is Some Cases from hour Data Base to share with you as Evidence:

 

On April 22, 2008, Puntland police had detained two central committee of ONLF in Garowe. Few hours later, the detainees were handed over to Ethiopian army officers from Warder. The two men were visiting their families in Puntland that both wives of the two men are Puntland citizens. Names of the victims are Mohamed Ahmed `Afi known as (Dhiire) and Abdi-Noor Mohamed Soyaan. The fate of Dhiire and Soyan is not known.

 

On May 1, 2008, a one-week later during the two ONLF Officers handed over to Ethiopia; other six civilian young men from ****** were arrested in Galka`yo police station. Within few hours, the victims were handed over to Ethiopia. Names of five among the six victims are; Farah Good, Abdi-Yare Haybe, Abdi-Noor Siyad Ismail, Omar Sheik-Mohamed, Kabul (full name not get), we were not able to get name of the sixth victim.

 

On October 9, 2009, during the night, group of men come by a truck, which has government plate number in Galka`yo. They attacked a home in the town where the attackers had wounded the owner of the house, and kidnapped three men were guest of the local property owner. The three individuals were civilians from ****** who came to Galka`yo for healthy related issues. One of the three men named Mohamed Aardon was found a 25 km away from Galka`yo, somewhere near to the boundary between Ethiopia and Puntland. His kidnapers had severely cut his throat by knife and left him as he was killed. During the morning, pastoralist travelers found Aardon laying unconscious on the edge of a road. They brought him a hospital in Galka`yo, and doctors had reported to BBC Somali Section Radio, “The victims` throat was cut severely, lost a lot of blood, and his chance to survive is extremely small. The missing two men were not seen them again. Information about their fate are not known, whether their bodies were dumped on undisclosed location, however, many people believed missing victims were handed over to Ethiopia`s secret service.

 

On October 19, 2009, five men originally from ****** lived in Yemen refugee camp decided to go back to Somalia that their families live. They were carrying Somali Embassy issued official go home document. Once their boat docked in the Bosaso port, the Puntland Police had detained them. Immediately Ethiopian Secret Service had arrived that they separated detainees, interrogated, and tortured in naked. Few days later, the Ethiopian Secret Services came by aircraft that they took Abdi Mohamed Hassan (Abdi-Terso) by the support given by the Puntland leader Mr. Faroole.

 

On November 2, 2009, Abdullahi Hassan Ali passed while in Bosaso prison. We believe that Abdullah`s death was due to an internal injury occurred during the interrogation and abuse conducted by Puntland Police and Ethiopian Secret Service.

 

The remaining three men of Faseeh Ataab Ali, Mohamed Hassan Muse, and Mohamed Sheikh Batri are still in the Bosaso Prison cells.

 

Note: Based on the extent for the crimes committed by the Puntland Authority against ****** refugees in main towns of Puntland, the above-mentioned cases are not many comparing to the more victims in our data record.

Mohsin hit the nail on the head! An entity that claims to host the best minds of Puntlanders had labored days and days just to give birth to a spiteful Manichean opinion. Indeed, with a friend like PDF, one needs to go back to the master lexicon to discern the meaning of the word malevolence. Their sordid, impetuous and blind defense for the indefensible behavior of warlord Farole will certainly haunt them forever. Mediocrity is the best that PDF has begotten thus far. Next time round, let us hope that commonsense prevails.

My advice to you guys in the future, please lets stop crying about Farole's actions and take some tangible steps. There are many groups which are working on changing the course and putting a STOP to this madness of selling somalis to the highest bidder. Seek these groups and join them.

Good luck with that, tell me how it goes. Remember the whole Abdi Qeybdiid incident, where he was arrested, but the video evidence was deemed to be heavily manipulated? He was quickly released due to a lack of evidence. Do you have any idea how hard it is to even get your case heard, let alone a conviction? You are yet to provide a single shred of evidence, except a fake picture. I don't think in all the years of Somalia's civil war has someone been convicted, because the international community knows very well that the people who are putting forward a complaint against someone are hypocrites!! Because they turn a blind eye to the exact same crimes that are being committed by the people they support.

We all agree that leaders must be held accountable to their actions. But our followership to any leader must be born out of our judicious cognizance that the leader is doing the right thing. We need to support those that make use of their authority thoughtfully and sensibly and not those that act in a preposterous manner. After all, a leader is not a mouthpiece of Allah. He is not infallible. He is human to err. It sounds to me absurd and ironic when the most learned among us follow a warlord blindly as mere pawns or stooges; when they cannot question his gaffes, when they choose to keep a blind-eye on his monkey business and allow him to gallop on the rough road much travelled by many of African demagogical dictators that held their people as hapless hostages. Those of us who wish to see a prosperous and peaceful Puntland should be wary of Farole’s slip into manipulative and divisive dictatorial tendencies that only serve his inflated, larger-than-life ego and not the beleaguered people of Puntland.

Notwithstanding their current status of being holed in a state of blind stupor, the PDF may help stop the making of another dictator.
