Somalia: Another Ship Seized Off Coast Written by AllAfrica May 28, 2008 at 05:58 PM The Panama-flagged cargo ship MV Amiya Scan was seized last Sunday. "The crew members are four Russian officers and five Filipinos. The ship was carrying a cargo of knocked-down drilling rig," said Mr Andrew Mwangura, the Seafarers Assistance Programme regional coordinator, who communicated with people in contact with the vessel. The ship is a 3,480 dead weight tonnage multi-purpose dry cargo vessel, which was sailing from Mombasa port to Constanza, Romania. The ship was hijacked in international waters in the Gulf of Aden. "All relatives of the crew members have been informed and have been offered every support available," Mr Mwangura said. He said he had been in touch with the ship owners, who said that their first priority was the security of the crew. A Dutch shipping company owns the ill-fated vessel. The hijacking of the ship comes just days after the pirates released a Jordanian-flagged cargo ship off Somalia, the latest in a series of pirate attacks in the area this year. The vessel, Victoria, was seized about 40 nautical miles off Somalia's capital Mogadishu. The Jordanian vessel, owned by an Emirates company, was carrying 4,200 tonnes of sugar donated by Denmark to the people of war-torn Somalia. Last month, Somali pirates hijacked a French luxury yacht, Le Ponant, and its crew of 30 for a week. It was released on April 11 when French security forces pursued some of the suspected pirates and captured six who were then taken to France, where they were charged in a Paris court. The coastal waters off Somalia, is plagued by insecurity, are considered among the most dangerous in the world. AllAfrica
