Jacpher Posted January 3, 2007 Ethiopian Troops to Remain in Somalia By Sher Zieve – Somalian transitional government Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Ghedi has requested that Ethiopian troops remain in Somalia for at least the next several months. Gedi indicated their presence is needed to maintain stability in the war-torn country. Although radical Islamists and the fundamentalist Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) were routed from the area, many of these have vowed to continue guerilla warfare against the Somali government. Gedi advised the BBC: "It depends how the stabilization and pacification takes place. It can be weeks, it can be months but, not more." Gedi has also asked that the African Union send peacekeeping troops to Somalia and Uganda and Nigeria have already offered to send troops. Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said that he held hope that Ethiopian troops could be removed within the next two weeks. Source
