"Sh21b is available for the Somalia deployment. The funds have already been provided by the African Union," defence minister Crispus Kiyonga disclosed during a press briefing in Parliament yesterday. He said the AU received the funds from the United States, the United Kingdom and the European Union. :rolleyes: Speaking at the end of the caucus meeting of the NRM, he explained that the UPDF contingent in Somalia would stay for about nine months. Contrary to the army which talked of a force of 1,500, the minister mentioned 1,400 officers and men and a battalion of tanks. "Uganda's role will be building capacity and training of the Somalia people to be able to take charge of their affairs," Kiyonga stressed. The caucus unanimously resolved to support the deployment. The motion is expected to be tabled in Parliament tomorrow. The UN Security Council last Friday urged the AU to quickly send troops to Somalia to allow Ethiopia to withdraw its forces and the government to lift its emergency security measures. Hours before the meeting opened, assailants fired four rockets at Mogadishu port, which plunged into the sea. Officials blame remnants of the Islamists but residents fear the violence may also be due to rivalry between warlords who are part of the transitional government.
