August 17th commemoration of Sultan Hurre’s death

On Tuesday August 17th, we ask all people of good conscience to commemorate for the 2nd anniversary of Sultan Hurre’s tragic assassination. May Allah’s peace and mercy be upon the Sultan. The man whose name is a synonym for evil—the wicked Colonel (Col. Abdullahi) viciously murdered the Sultan at Kalabayr on August 17th , 2002. The brutal death of Sultan Hurre was a heartbreaking loss to his family, his friends, the Somali civil society, and particularly anyone who might have known him believes that no human being could be capable of harming or would wish him ill-will toward such a noble and gentle soul unless the assassin is the most cold-blooded murderer, heartless, insensitive barbarian, and beset by an evil sword spirit.

The tragic assassination of Sultan Hurre has shocked all the progressive & peace-loving individuals and they are still in a state of mourning. This heinous crime was criminal act against Somali civil society and traditional leaders. It was humanly impossible to conceive murdering such an excellent human being who possessed of all conceivable good qualities in terms of moral goodness and character. Sultan Hurre struck anybody as a very charming, warm and likeable person.

Human life is very precious so it should be treated with dignity and respect. Allah the Almighty has honored human beings and strictly prohibited us to kill human beings or to inflict cruel pain and other inhuman punishment. However, a thug who is obsessed with power neither respects the value of human lives nor gives a damn what Allah prohibited us. The problem of greed and lust for power drove him to total lunatic. Philosophically, he believes that the killings will automatically secure his seat, or whenever he kills someone that he will be one step closer to the president’s seat. The wicked Colonel is pleased with his vile actions and he takes great pride in his savageness. He has made it clear on many occasions that he considers himself 'strongman'.

But it’s a fair question to ask, what does ‘strongman’ mean to him? It’s probably fair to say that ‘strongman’ means to him a total reversal of what we can think of. He is merely praising or proud of his practices of sadistic killings, corruption & scams, nepotism, suspending Puntland‘s constitution, locking the house of state legislatures, hogging the economy of the state, holding Puntland as hostage, and so forth. It is indeed pathetic act of an evil mind and that means he is operating on the rule of the jungle which makes sense only to him and his deadhead supporters.

Quite the opposite, the virtue of strong leader entails being a good leader who abides the rule of law, the leader who serves his people with honest, integrity, compassion, and the leader who seeks the best for those he serves--who improves the life of his fellow citizens and leads his country toward peace and prosperity. Paradoxically, Col. Abdullahi, who is a ruthless thug and best known for his beastliness, is running for president (The occupant of the most prestigious office in the nation should have the best quality in every aspect of the life). Instead, he was supposed to be in a maximum security penitentiary like any other criminal for his atrocious crimes that he committed against humanity.

One of the most appalling and shocking things about the Colonel’s supporters (cult-like followers)! They unleash a diatribe on the slain Sultan even though he is in the grave for almost two years now. According to Islamic Law (Sharia), it’s not permissible to badmouth someone who has died. Nevertheless, it’s certain that Colonel’s cult-like followers have lost the ethical principles and the norms of conducts in terms of morality, religion and rationality. They can’t draw hard distinctions between right and wrong. His blind followers like any other cult-like mentality the Colonel is their spiritual father and only one thing is tuned into their mind which is the Colonel is a hero, prophet, and the best of the best regardless of what he does or what he did in the past.

Another stunning thing about the vulgar tendency of these blind followers or deadheads is that every time certain notable individuals talk about the problem of Somalia or propose a viable solution to Somalia’s complex problems, members of this cult group lose last bit of their sanity as their nervous systems have been tweaked, or severely damaged. For instance, the recent open letter from the former Prime Minister of Somalia Abdirizak Haji Hussein sparked a lot of anger and adverse criticism from the members of this cult group. The letter from the former Prime Minister was personal opinion of what could be a feasible solution to Somalia’s problem [The letter stated: (1) Since a strong rival exists between ****** and ******* and they have done a whole lot of trouble in Somalia, they should be barred from the power in the coming five years' time. (2) The faulty constitution which is clan based formula will do great ham than any sense of resolve].

Even though there was no hard feelings toward any particular person or group in that letter, members of this cult group reacted angrily and insulted the distinguished gentleman (Abdirizak) by sullying his name. Instead of suggesting an alternative idea or disagreeing with him in a civilized manner, they attacked him personally and unleashed a scathing denunciation. Anyway, no dispute that Abdirizak is a man of incredible intellect and integrity, well known, and highly respected in Somalia and different parts of the world. He is an icon of the struggle for Somalia’s independence (SYL)--his heroic deeds. He is admired by many intellectuals and pragmatic politicians for his fight against corruption in his administration, for his clean record and eloquence, and for his stance on Somalia’s civil war, thus nobody'll be able to mess around with his nice, solid reputation.

Nonetheless, the theme of my writing serves to memorialize Sultan Hurre and to support his ideals and principles. It’s important that we honor the memory and moral courage of Sultan Hurre as an example of what we must do today. As you all know, the cause of his death was, he gallantly opposed and said, “No to The Colonel’s Automatic Three-Year Term Extension--immoral and unconstitutional law, and totalitarian tyranny,†reflecting on Sultan Hurre’s lofty ideals we must loudly speak out against the short-sighted, immoral, criminal warlords, and other despicable profiteers from human misery who ruined and dissected our nation into fiefdoms where almost million of people have lost their lives and millions of others are in serious plight. Also we must loudly speak out against IGAD’s policy and efforts to install Adisababa’s favorite warlord (Anti-Islamic, the most notorious killer of all time, and the most malicious and ignorant person among us) in power.

In addition, we can speak out and become active in standing up for peace, justice, and national unity. On the will of Allah, we will be able to change the things by speaking out and standing up for our humanity and dignity. We are called to speak for the weak, for the voiceless of our people, and for the victims of those vicious warlords. So please wherever you are on August 17th, remember Sultan Hurre and talk about the importance of his ideals, action and philosophy of today. Please be sure to break the silence. Otherwise as Dr. Martin L. King reminded us being silent, “A time comes when silence is betrayal,â€

Once again, on behalf of all progressive & peace loving individuals, and Somali civil society, we strongly condemn Sultan Hurre’s tragic assassination. We unequivocally denounce the perpetrator of this repugnant act who planned, ordered, and conducted the order and its execution. We demand justice and we won’t rest until the justice is served. At this point in time, we are sure that the wicked Colonel will get his day in court, and I personally will be happy to make the trip to the Court of Queen's Bench to see him sitting in the defendant's cage.

We have a high regard for the cause of the Sultan’s death, his moral courage and exemplary behavior. His pleasing persona and his ever smiling face will always be remembered. Sultan Hurre will forever live in our memory and hearts. May Allah’s compassion and peace be upon him.
