Jacaylbaro Posted May 18, 2008 The journey began in 1981 by declaring the Somali National Movement (SNM) in London. It evoluted in 1982 by creating the military wing and starting the first attacks on the governement in the mountains of Sheikh, Gacan-libaax, Erigavo and others. It took another turn in 1985 by carrying out successful assasinations inside the big cities. It turned to be most craziest advendure in the history just be the most successful in 1988 by invading Burco then Hargeisa in front of the eyes of everybody. It was successfully libarated in 1991 by ousting the dictator finally and taking full control of all the territories. It was announced on the 18th of May 1991 to be an independent country from what was known Somalia. It took a further step in 1994 by printing the Somaliland shillings, creating the first national military, police and security forces. It was a beautiful and well-known country in 2001 by holding its first free and fair elections. It is now 2008 and heading to the goal once and for all. to the goal it was created ,,, to the final destination ,,, to be recognized by the international community. Jacaylbaro Posted May 19, 2008 hadhwanaag 2008-05-18 (Hadhwanaagnews) As a Somalilander, I would like to congratulate you with the 17th anniversary of the revival of the Republic of Somaliland. 18th May is the day that the Somalilanders have withdrawn from the union that they formed with Somalia on the 1st July 1960. It is a celebration with mixed feelings as every other celebration. It reminds us of the long struggle during the 31st years of the union, the massacre, the hatred and the dissection that the regime of the “Somali Republic” had brought to the Somalilanders. Appreciatively, this day also reminds us the Triumph and the resumption of the “Republic of Somaliland”. To value the significance of 18th May, recapture the lost Somaliland’ history and eradicate the mistaken belief about our history let me telling briefly about the history of Somaliland. The Somalilanders have signed a treaty of protection with Great Britain in 1884 and became “British Somaliland protectorate”. After 76 years of harmonious association with Great Britain, during which period the Somalilanders fought alongside the British in the two World Wars, Somaliland attained a negotiated independence from Great Britain on the 26th June 1960 and became the “Republic of Somaliland”. However, five days later our grandfathers and fathers made the biggest mistake in post-colonial Africa and went to an unconditional union with Somalia, who had gained independence from Italy, on the 1st July 1960. The union between Somaliland and Somalia gave birth to the “Somali Republic” and not to “Republic of Somalia” as mentioned incorrectly in various articles and books. I would like to highlight that mistake by referring to the statement of the act of union between Somaliland and Somalia which says: “All the persons who on July 1st were citizens of Somaliland and Somalia became citizens of the “Somali Republic”. The act of union also says: “All rights lawfully vested in or obligations lawfully incurred by the independent Governments of Somaliland and Somalia or by any person on their behalf, shall be deemed to have been transferred to and accepted by the Somali Republic upon the establishment of the Union”. From this statements, ladies and gentlemen, we can acknowledge that Somaliland is never been part of Somalia but Somaliland is been part of the “Somali Republic” which in fact ceased to exist on the 18th May 1991 when the Somalilanders decided to withdraw from the union. With these words I would like to commemorate our 17th anniversary and I wish you all a very happy celebration. HAMBALYO…………………….HAMBALYO…………………….HAMBALYO God bless Somaliland and the Somalilanders, Id Hasan aw Muse, London
