Puntland State of Somalia Opens Washington, D.C. Office to Unify Somalia

Friday November 7, 7:45 am ET

WASHINGTON, Nov. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- In the absence of a Somalian embassy in the U.S., a representative of Puntland, one of only two regions in Somalia with relative stability, has opened an office in Washington, D.C. Its mission: to help establish a recognized democratic government to prepare Somalia for elections at all levels; to unify Somalia by persuading Washington to send a high-level delegation to the Somalian national peace conference in Kenya, which has been going on for fifteen months with no resolution; and to raise awareness of the plight of the Somali people.

Since 1991, when dictator Siad Barre was ousted from leadership, Somalia has been a country at war with itself. Violence and civil unrest are part of daily life for millions of Somalis; only Puntland in the northeast and Somaliland in the northwest offer a degree of safety and stability.

The rest of this East African country bears more than a passing resemblance to the Taliban's Afghanistan, complete with oppression, starvation, disease, poverty, terrorism and grievous civil and human rights violations. Humanitarian aid and U.N. workers are greeted by armed thugs and barred from entering much of the country. Somalia's long coastline has become a virtual dumping ground for ships' garbage and toxic waste. And because a handful of warlords refuse to take part in the peace conference, instead perpetuating the criminality rampant in Somalia, the peace process is at a near standstill.

"Somalis are the most vulnerable people in the world right now. We need great humanitarians to come forward and accept the challenge of uniting Somalia and freeing the Somali people," said Koshin Mohamed, representative of the Puntland State of Somalia Diplomatic Mission to the U.S. "In establishing this office, we can give Somalis hope for peace. We will represent Somalia's national interests in Washington, D.C. -- not just one region, but all groups and all Somali people. This office will work tirelessly to unify Somalia. Somalia cannot remain hostage to three or four warlords who have no interest in the peace process in Kenya."

Although the UN, the Arab League, the African Union and the international community support the unification of Somalia, Mohamed said, those groups have had only low-level representation at the peace conference to date. With full-time efforts in Washington, Mohamed hopes to change that.

"Puntland State of Somalia has been doing, and will do, whatever it takes to realize a democratic institution of government in Somalia that is recognized by the world community. We are starting to see some success, but we have a long way to go," he said. "We are now calling on the UN and on all countries -- all people interested in Somalia, human rights and environmental causes -- to contact this office and help in any way they can. The people of Somalia are depending on it."

Puntland is unlikely to realise any democratization of its institutions as long as Ina Yusuf is at da helm. The only thing dis man respects is sheer force. He is a meniac, not that other wackos are any better. I hope dis office serves some purpose, n not be just another client for foriegn powers to manipulate.
