SOMALILAND: Berbera Inaugurates Second Livestock Quarantine Center

BERBERA (Somalilandpress) -– Vice President Abdirahman Saylici today cut the ribbon for the second regional quarantine and livestock facility to supply meat for markets in the Middle East and Asia in the redsea-port town of Berbera.

The well organized opening ceremony was attended by cabinet members led by the vice-President, Mr Abdirahman Saylici, the governor of Saahil region, Mr Mohamud Ali Suleiman, the mayor of Berbera Mr Abdulla Mohamed Arab and leading business executives.

Nasir Haji Abdi Awad, Executive Director of Indha-Deero Group Company informed the press and the audience about the new quarantine facility which is a joint venture between Indha-Dheero Group Companies and businessman Mohammed Qaid Sa’eed, also known as Abu Yasser. Abu Yasser, a Yemeni immigrant living in Saudi Arabia has long been interested in investing in the region. The previous regime of Dahir Riyale Kahin refused to give him a permits after they suspected he was trying to export the animals through the Djibouti port.

In early May of this year, Abu Yasser made a brief visit to Somaliland, meeting with Indha-deero group and other leading livestock investors, however a local newspaper reported he was forcefully deported an allocation which Indha-deero company fiercely defended (see Indhadeero Group hits back over Arab investor deportation claims.

Many believe this is a move by Abu Yasser to undermine Somaliland’s reinstated livestock trade to the Gulf by dismantling the existing quarantine facility which belongs to wealthy Saudi, Al Jabiri. A large number of people feel Abu Yasser’s Djibouti facility is loosing a lot of business to Berbera and he is here to close the market for Somaliland and keep Djibouti as the only livestock market in the Horn of Africa.

Founded in 1962 by Abdi Ali Awad (AAA), the Indho-Deero group operates a group of companies from shipping, hotels to livestock trade and is one of the largest companies in the country.

The new quarantine center has the capacity to house 250,000 small livestock and will employ roughly 450 employees.

This new facility which is the second in the country is expected to boost Somaliland’s livestock exports disease free to the neighboring Gulf nations and south-east Asian countries.

The new facility comes days after a Saudi delegation consisting of businessmen and doctors said the existing facility in Berbera meets international standards.

They say if you're bad at one thing, try something else. Berbera fails as a port so it has to turn itself into a livestock mall.

Timur, stop the hate mate. This is good news. Anything that will help alleviate the abject poverty and hopelessness in Somaliland should be commended thoroughly.

Qudhac, pirates are extremely successful, with annual revenues that double Somaliland's budget, so its definitely a smart change. Will Berbera's livestock investment pay off enough to bring the port to Bosaso's traffic levels? We'll see.

You haven't monopolized anything. The most previous data has Berbera just 5% above Bosaso in terms of livestock exports. Berbera has 2 facilities right now and Bosaso's second facility is near its completion stage. You had a chance to monopolize but you let weak leadership get in the way. Good luck to Berbera, I hope to see it return to its former glory.
