"Ironically, the activities of the pirates may be lifting the lid on the illicit trade in weapons around the Horn of Africa.

Though these guys are painted with lithe contortions of a big snake by the media, they are blessing in disguise, in my humble opinion, to the long Somali coastline --violated everyday by foreign-owned vessels and fish trawlers and freighters carrying illegal shipments of weapons-- because of the absence of central government, an opportunity the vultures have taken great advantage of our internal crisis. Like Congo, they would rather have Somalia remain lawless than live to witness a robust, functioning central government.

This interview taken by the BBC Somali Services with a Somali man claiming to be the leader of the Somali Pirates on the ship is very intersting....

They guy claims to be a good samaritan protecting the Somali sea from unauthorized fisherman and foreign companies dumping waste. And he calmly says that they are ready to die if the situation gets worse and that they are not bothered by the warships watching them:

here is what the man said:

Abwaan, thanks for the link. I wonder why Y Garaad cut that part of interview with the Captain, particularly the last bit where the captain was saying that one of his crew died because of "illness".
