ALSHABAB: between wild gale and prosperous winds

Recommended Posts

It is a classic case of organisational obsolescence from my end. Alshabab must be disbanded, and the clergy driving it must go back to the mosques. That is true to the extent their rise has been tolerated due to the occupation of the country by foreign forces. They have done their work in defending the country and they need to be recognised and honoured for their sacrifices. One way of honouring will be to forgive them for the horrendous human right violations they have caused in the course of the liberation struggle. Yes, forgetting the girls they stoned to death; the men they whipped in public, those they beheaded and those they amputated. Recognition involves decorating them with titles and putting the wreath over their bearded face. That is no mean reward.

But if the intention was to rule Somalia, ostensibly to impose Islamic administration, one may argue they have some more reasons to hang on. But, to me, nothing justifies their continued existence as an armed group. If they wish to organise themselves into a political party, an Islamic one, with the agenda of instituting Sharia law as the law of the land, they should first allow peace to come, and people to vote. They should take the calls of the wider section of the culuma, the diaspora, and the famine-stricken fellow citizens in what is left of the country.

They should know that it is not that we have not been pained by the atrocities committed by the young outfits that we were silent. It is because we believed they overall contribution outweighed their mistakes in the struggle to restore Somali dignity. But it seems the Xassen–Joke and latter-day Abu-fulan’s are suffering from the inevitable martyrdom syndrome and want to perpetuate violence. They should understand the people of Somalia and the interest of the nation is more important than their nonsensical visions and delusions.

They have a choice to make: to end up on the highlights of history books in Somalia, or to be a footnote in the black pages of it. If they choose the first, they are our sheiks, moral leaders, elders and liberators. They will be invited to make public speeches on important occasions; will be handed the scissors to open new educational facilities and memorial centers. Hardly a holiday will pass without them coming to the limelight and making their felicitation messages. But if they chose the latter, all their sacrifices would be in vain. They will be remembered for the distress they would have brought on the nation with their ordinariness and obduracy. Abu-Mansuur, Abu-Zuhayr will be characters children are frightened with much the same way as Madax-kuti and Arawreelo are. Xassen-turki will be a caricature with big machete, chopping the heads of kids in child movies.

This is a valedictory rebuke and a reminder to the leaders of Alshabab. If they can’t read English, may someone tell them in Arabic, after the formality of ‘asalaatu wasalaamu calaa ashrafil mursaliin; amaa bacdi”.

Alshabab didn't lose all those men and sacrificed so much so that they could be reduced to ceremonial little men in suits, who cut ribbons at official gatherings. I think your losing your sense of logic these days. Who or What has infected you?

Impressive piece by A&T. The Great Somali religious scholars have finally spoken out in support of Shariif and Sharmaake's blueprint for the restoration of peace and security.

Sharrif promises to pontentially consider ways to dismantle the contraversial 4.5 structure in that its application has been of expediency, but once peace is restored all over Somalia, there will be regional, municipal and general elections held and the transition to a permenant Government.

Wise thinking citizens have reiterated how unreasonable it is to imagine the possibility of Somalia where it's cut off from the rest of the world because assumimg the responsibility of a a de jure state entails the normal consequence of diplomatoc intercourse.

We can be an Islamic state, yet be conciliatory,trade-oriented, hospitable and look to long-term solutions to an outstanding issues.

Ngonge,

ONLF issue is a separate issue, and our suffering under Ethiopian colonialism must not take peace and progress in Somalia hostage. Our long-term strategic interst lies in Somalia becoming a beacon of peace. We will have a reliable supporter, one which is no more a liablity to be attached to, but an asset. As far as Alshabab is concerned they should declare it functus offico (no long seized of the matter) and pray peacefully in mosques. Otherwise, let them be reminded they shall be fighting the new government on their peril, suo periculo .

Geelka

The cries of hopeful Somali's -young and old, the rare sight of consensus that exists today, the quality of leadership we see in the new generation, and the readiness of the world to support the free-will of the Somali's has infected me. I am amazed. You said Alshabab were not shedding blood to be pleased with mere titles later. So, it was to rule somalia- ala Taliban style?!!! I suspected that as well. But that is what I oppose. And the way they come down on us with the force of an injunction, as if we have infracted Godly laws, when we call for peace, now that the occupation is ended.

^^Alshabab weren't fighting to merely free Somalia from Ethiopian occupation. They existed before the Ethiopian occupation entered, remember? WHy do you think their leaders were in the Tora Bora way before Xabashis came?Their goal was to always to rule Somalia by what they see as pure Islamic Shariah. Their motto was to get hit by by a bullet in the chest or be victorious and rule Somalia by Islamic law. Ceyro's words.

Whether one disagrees with them or resents their "talibinization" of Somalia is another debate altogether. What is absurd and illogical is that you and others expect them to go back to their mosques and become peaceful monks, just because what saw as your goals have been reached. The boys were only needed to fight evil Xabashis now their nuisance isn't needed, so you say. Are they condoms whom dicarded( pardon the pun)?

Why on earth would they give up all their territory and influence they have created to their enemies? Have you heard of a leader doing this in history? I don't think even Bhudda would have done that. And whoever does that is a complete *****. I can't see any logic( just think from their perspective for a second) in them surrendering their arms to the tfg and their cohorts. Forget about the nonsense about new leaders( btw, the new pm was the old mans advisor, so much new blood) and young turks running Somalia for a second. You say it should be done for peace. They will simply turn around and say that they are the ones that have brought peace to most of Southern SOmalia, whilst the tfg is setting up roadblocks in MOG. There are three major reasons why they should go back to the mosques and become monks:

1. Becaus AT doesn't like the Taliban and he thinks their job has been done

2. Because there are young turks and fresh blood.

To use Ngonges words, these are largely stuff and nonsense reasons.

This is probably the most powerful argument:

3. For the sake of peace.

But this is still unproven too and the hotel sleepers will have to prove that they have a better alternative of peace than shababs. They have to actually return to Somalia and put their fancy words into action. Until then, youths will be the defacto rulers of Southern Somalia, unless the people revolt or some powerful force crushes them to oblivion. Finders keepers, loosers weepers.

ps. mansur said to ALjazeera if the SOmali people choose a righteous leader who rules iSLAMically, then they will become his soldiers. So there is some hope. Let's wait for the Mahdi. :D

Your argument is good and based on factual assessment of the situation. Mine was an appeal to the conscience of Shabab leaders. The purpose of writing differs whether it is an analysis or a call for something to be changed.

They are not the shield impious people use to cheat death when they are involved in acts of debauchery. But, they should go away now that most Somali's want them to disappear. if you ask me whether they will or not, I will tell you some will, some will not. Those who don't will be wiped out, as their support wanes and the appeal of their cause diminshes. REMEMBER: their survival and success against the TFG was more because the TFG was a non-entity run by the most incompetent and useless creatures in the world; not becuase they were exceptionally powerful. They are unable to beat the men with long hair and meat-eating habits in Galguduud.

So they are foreign-backed actors who have received training in foreign countries to achieve their sole objective of ''ruling Somalia''?

In that sense, they are not different then those warlors trained in Ethiopia and other foreign countries and as such backed by them with the sole objective of ruling Somalia.

^^There is a workaround on that awoowe. Take the median of his posts about alshabaab, and that should tell us where both his heart and head are on the matter.

ONLF issue might be a separate but PEACE in Somalia is ONLY a temporary one until that land's issue is solved. Ethiopia knows that a peaceful and strong Somalia will never give up the right to that land; hence them being in our business all the times and their enmity and antagonistic behavior towards Somalis

To claim that certain persons in the TFG was the root of all the problem, and their removal the solution to the problem is nonsense.

You are either completely blinded from reason and are a confused fella, or you just want to jump on xiin's bandwaagon, of cheerleeding for xariif sharif.

The fact of the matter is, nothing substantial has been changed, in terms of the structure of the TFG, or the members comprising this entity.

The same useless warlords that ran havoc in Somalia for 18 years fill its ranks, they are it's generals, policeman, MPs, and even ministers.

Soomaalidu waxey ku mahmaahda nirig xaraam ah mid xalaal ah madasho.

Walaal waxa loo dagaalamay ma aha maanso kursi, ee wa mabda’a.

The matter in the c/regions has more to do with the lack of unity and strategy on the part of the resistance than a formidable foe.

Meiji, Don't be such a simpleton and literalist. Almost Every political group in the world wants to impose or at least influence their view of governance in the world.

A&T. I can't predict the future, but everyone is entitled to their dreams. Anyway, if youths are rooted out, it will probably go back to warlodism and clan era.

But I am perplexed as to your sudden change of heart and optimism. What has changed so much.
