An Etobicoke MP is flying to Somalia today on an unofficial fact-finding mission to raise awareness of the need for international support of peace and stability in the civil war-torn east African nation.

 

Borys Wrzesnewskyj plans to meet with senior officials of the Somali transitional government, including President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed and Prime Minister Ali Ghedi during his three-day goodwill mission to Jowhar, 90 km north of the capital, Mogadishu.

 

Jowhar is the temporary seat of the transitional government.

 

"The Canadian government, in partnership with the Somali Canadian community - the largest African community in Canada - can play a critical role in bringing peace and civil society to this failed state," the Etobicoke Centre MP said.

 

Somalia has not had a functional central government for the past 14 years, following the collapse in 1991 of the government of Muhammad Siyad Barre. Civil war erupted soon after Barre was toppled, as rival warlords fought for power.

 

The country is without a government, infrastructure, institutions, policing or organized health care and education.

 

A transitional government in Somalia was established last October in Nairobi, Kenya with the goal of bringing peace and stability to the country.

 

Abdi Elmi, a native Somali who immigrated to Canada in 1989, said his sources in Somalia are hopeful the transitional government, which has split, will stand and be supported by the international community.

 

"Political, financial, technological and financial resources are all needed in Somalia," said Elmi, who is travelling with the MP on the mission. "People believe if they have peace, everything will come back."

 

Adam Esse, president of the Somali Relief Network, is also going on the mission.

 

Wrzesnewskyj, who is funding his trip himself, said he expects to report on the mission's findings and "make recommendations to help push the agenda" at a government caucus meeting in Regina next month.

 

The first-term MP said he would like to see the federal government commit to the creation of a special envoy to Somalia. If an elder Canadian statesman isn't available, Wrzesnewskyj said he would consider taking on the role.

 

In Somalia, institutions require building from the ground up, including a central electoral structure, parliamentary rules and procedures, and the creation of a police force.

 

Humanitarian and social concerns - such as the development of hospitals and schools - is a longer-term project, he said.

 

For now, keeping peace in the fractious transitional government is a top priority. Both men agree.

 

"Warlords don't know how to nation build, they know how to build their pockets," said Elmi, who sits on the Etobicoke-based Somali Reconstruction and Development Organization.

 

"Failure of the transitional government would be terrifying. Then, we'd be spending millions, if not billions of dollars when the fighting starts."

 

Michael Frederiksen, an Etobian who travelled to Kenya on a teaching and research assignment, approached Wrzesnewskyj to participate in a Somali roundtable he organized earlier this year to unite key leaders in the Toronto Somali community. Participants discuss renewal-related issues in Somalia, the peace process and recommend to members of parliament strategies for the Canadian government to assist the reconstruction of a stable and democratically elected government in Somalia.

 

An initiative spearheaded by roundtable organizers, members of the Somali community sent approximately 4,500 letters to federal government leaders and select MPs across the country earlier this year to encourage "political recognition from Canada" of the transitional government in Somalia.

 

"This is about children and youth, ensuring their future peace and prosperity," Frederiksen said. "This dialogue is neither a debate nor a rallying cry. It is a sober reflection about what we can do to make a difference in the lives of Somali people."

 

Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew has said that the Canadian government will work with the transitional government.

 

Fourteen previous attempts to bring civil society to Somalia have failed.

WooW this is some great News. This government does need the awareness for international support.

So the Somali Community hade alot to do with Mr. Etobicoke coming to our country. The community their must be very strong.

What's so great about some unknown Canadian MP visiting Jowhar? :confused: He's going there so he can take pictures of poor Somalis and tell a facinating tale to his voters of how he helped uncivilized Africans who can't even govern themselves! Brother all we need is to be on the Spot light and that's what this MP is going to bring. Just like the 1990s we were on the spot light and that's how international attention came to Somalia. Once we hit the media in North America International attention is at hand.

Its a first step. The world bank reps made a visit to Jowhar, staf from the UN, AU, IGAD have all visited the transitional capiatl and now we have an MP from Canada going. Whats important is that Somalia specially where the goevrnment is in is safe to do busienss, that fact alone brings some hope.

Since his contituents are mainly Soomaalis, politics thus dedicates that he must try to represent them fully in Ottawa, including the issues that affect their respective country, Soomaaliya.

 

There was an unexpected twist, however. Some Soomaali "community organizations" advised him not to go to Soomaaliya, and should he insist to go, he should go to Muqdisho, not Jowhar. (Foes C/llaahi Yuusuf in clan disguise? Yep.)

 

He called a meeting for some "community leaders" who always is qalaafo and kishif around at their back (he knows this all too well for they go to him all the time complaining and whining against one another) and persuaded them that he is going and they should support since it is their country what is at stake.

 

Keeping in that light, he is a tiresless advocate of Soomaali issues at Canadian parliament, if there is any issue at all.

what a story. Somalians the same where ever they are huh. So where is he going to Go? I think He should go to both cities so he could get the whole story. I think He would be smart enough and would know what side to be on without any one telling him.
