Puntland Ministers Visit Minnesota

The ministers from Puntland, Somalia arrived in Minneapolis Minnesota. A large crowd of people welcomed them at the airport including one of the Minnesotan professors who visited Somalia last month. The ministers were excited and they feel at home in Minnesota.

 

After their welcome at the airport, the ministers went to the hotel where they were greeted by another group of Minnesotans and Somalis.

 

The ministers told the group about their purpose for coming and who they plan to visit in Minnesota.

This is the first time a Confederation Somali Community of Minnesota has invited a delegation from Puntland State of Somalia to Minnesota. The invitation was hand delivered by a Minnesota delegation who visited Puntland in July, 2006.

 

The Somali community will welcome the ministers with a large event to be held at the Brian Coyle Center at Cedar Riverside in Minneapolis. This event will take place from 4:00PM to 9:00PM, Friday August 11, 2006.

Puntland Ministers meet the Mayor of Minneapolis

Mohamed Ali Yusuf(Gaagaab), Minister of Finance and Abdulweli Abdiraxman Geyre, Vice Minister of Ports and Marine Resources met with R.T Ryback, the Mayor of Minneapolis Minnesota today. The purpose of the meeting was to build a relationship between Putland State of Somalia and the City of Minneapolis Minnesota.

 

 

Mayor Ryback welcomed the Ministers and expressed the importance of the Somali Community to the City of Minneapolis. Approximately 70,000 Somalis live in Minnesota and the majority of them live in Minneapolis. The local Somali Community played a large role in the campaign and election of R.T Ryback .

 

 

Mayor Ryback is an advocate for the local Somali Community promoting jobs, housing, health and education for Somalis. At today’s meeting, the mayor explained some of the educational programs that have been developed to train Somalis to be future leaders. In fact, a Somali student intern in the program is working with the mayor and attended this meeting.

 

 

The Somalis in Minneapolis are closely linked with Puntland State and this meeting further strengthened this link.

Puntland Ministers Visit Duluth Port Authority

The Duluth Seaway Port is the largest inland port in the world. Duluth Port is on the western tip of Lake Superior which is 82,097 square kilometers of the earth’s freshest water. The Port has an economic impact of $210 million and provides 2,000 jobs.

 

Mohamed Ali Yusuf(Gaagaab), Minister of Finance and Abdulweli Abdiraxman Geyre, Vice Minister of Ports and Marine Resources, met with Ronald Johnson, Trade Development Director of the Duluth Seaway Port Authority today. The purpose of the meeting was to establish a relationship between Puntland Ports and the Duluth Port in Minnesota. This relationship is important because the Duluth Port can be used as a model for developing the ports in Puntland.

 

A group from the Twin Cities, including: Mohamed Wardheera from Senator Norm Coleman’s office, Abdirizaq Dirir of Confederation of Somali Community of Minnesota, Amina Deeble of Somalie Women Civil War Survivors, Professor Deborah Johnson of Inver Hills Community College, Zakarie Adan of Somalia Media, and Abdimalik Askar of Minnesota State Colleges and Universities accompanied the ministers on the Duluth trip. After the meeting with the port authority, the group toured the harbor on a boat where the captain explained how ships utilize the port and the purpose of each of the 15 major terminals located in the harbor.
