General Duke Posted January 3, 2007 Somali President jets in, meets President Kibaki By Catherine Karongo & Correspondent The leader of Somalia's interim government Abdulahi Yusuf has arrived in Mombasa for crucial talks with President Mwai Kibaki over the fate of Islamists in the war-ravaged country. The plane carrying President Yusuf arrived at the Moi International Airport at 4.30pm. His entourage is expected at State House Mombasa for the discussions. The meeting by the two presidents comes barely hours after another by Kenya's top security chiefs, at the Coast PC's office. The meeting brought together Internal Security Minister John Michuki, Njenga Karume of Defence and Immigration Minister Gideon Konchella. Others at the meeting were the Secretary to the Cabinet Francis Muthaura, Military Chief General Jeremiah Kianga, Police Commissioner Major General Hussein Ali and Attorney General Amos Wako. The media was not briefed on the outcome of the meeting. Meanwhile, the United Nations estimates that there are some 300 refugees from Somalia camping at Liboi and Kiunga since late last week. United Nations High Commission for Refugees Tuesday said that there are about 200 refugees who have come in at Liboi and another 100 in Kiunga border points. A senior regional officer at the UN refugee agency in Nairobi Millicent Mutuli however said they have not managed to gain access to the border areas to ascertain their condition. Mutuli said: “We have advice from the government that there is security personnel at the border and they would prefer that we do not go at the border at this point.” She also expressed fear that there could be other people coming in directly to the refugee camps without passing through the border crossing though she said they are not in large numbers. Mutuli told Capital Newsbeat in an interview that they're prepared to handle up to 50,000 new refugees within the region that covers Kenya, Ethiopia and Yemen. “We are talking to the government even as at today and our staff in Daadab are in touch with provincial authorities in Garissa to see if we could get access to Liboi and bring people back to Daadab; but if the government is in a position to help them and to bring them across to the refugee camps that would be the ideal,” she said.
