Liqaye Posted November 4, 2003 Salaah is the greatest of the practical pillars of Islam, and khushoo’ in prayer is required by sharee’ah. When Iblees, the enemy of Allaah, vowed to mislead and tempt the sons of Adam and said “Then I will come to them from before them and behind them, from their right and from their left…” [al-A’raaf 7:17, interpretation of the meaning], one of his most significant plots became to divert people from salaah by all possible means and to whisper to them during their prayer so as to deprive them of the joy of this worship and cause them to lose the reward for it. As khushoo’ will be the first thing to disappear from the earth, and we are living in the last times, the words of Hudhayfah (may Allaah be pleased with him) are particularly pertinent to us: “The first thing of your religion that you will lose is khushoo’, and the last thing that you will lose of your religion is salaah. There may be a person praying who has no goodness in him, and soon you will enter the mosque and not find anyone who has khushoo’.” (al-Madaarij, 1/521). Because of what every person knows about himself, and because of the complaints that one hears from many people about waswaas (insinuating thoughts from Shaytaan) during the salaah and the loss of khushoo’, the need for some discussion of this matter is quite obvious. Rahima Posted November 7, 2003 JZK, much appreciated especially considering that khushuuc is hard to attain. Walaahi you have to fight with that shaytaan. I try to pray tarawiix at the masaajid as opposed to home (which is more ajar for me as a woman) because of my quest of attaining khushuuc in prayer- at home you get so distracted. I remember once hearing of a story of the salaf where a man was looking for something he had lost and a scholar told him to go and perform salat. All of a sudden, as soon as the man began his prayer shaytaan with his evil whisperings came with the news of the whereabouts of the lost object and of course all to block his attainment of kushuuc and interrupt his concentration. Of course as soon the man finished the salat he went to search for the object at that particular place and what do you know it, of course it was there. We are in such a sad state considering that the concentration of the saxaaba was so great that one saxabi even had his leg amputated whilst in salat and he did not even flinch and here we are getting distracted with silly worldly matters. Liqaye Posted November 8, 2003 Rahima I had also heard a similar story although in the version I have heard it was the shabi Omar (R.A) who commented that the devil is so intent on breaking ones kushoo that he whispered to him the were abouts of something imporatnt he had lost. Xafsa Posted November 8, 2003 Liqaye jazaka alaah walaal. Sometimes my wondering mind gets so bad I don't know how many rakcas I prayed! I find myself thinking abouta question of an exam I took, whether or not the gas in my car is enough to take me to work and back, when my next exam is and what subject...did i pay my credit card bill?, the cell phone bill? what about the insurance?...etc...etc...etc. Its sad walaahi even the little time during the day that is supposed to be reserved for allah is not safe. We are constantly worrying about something...It reminds me of an aayah... Laqad khalaqnal insaana fii kabad. Anyways sorry if I went off track there for a minute...but this topic was well needed.
