Somalia: UN boss calls for world to support country's struggling govt

22 May 22, 2010 - 11:10:43 AM

The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said on Saturday that Somalia is one of the greatest crisis regions in the world, urging for support of country's fragile government in its effort to restore peace in the Horn of African nation

Speaking at a U.N. security conference in Turkey, Mr. Ban said the transitional federal government led by President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, who was in attendance, represents Somalia's best chance to end years of anarchy and humanitarian disasters

“The only way to restore stability is to support this (Somali) government in its reconciliation effort and its fight against extremism," Ban told delegates from 55 nations and 12 international organizations.

Ahmed’s government which was established in January 2009 through a UN-brokered power sharing deal, controls only few blocks of Mogadishu with the help of African Union troops while the rest of the country falls under the hands of powerful insurgent groups.

The UN chief urged Ahmed’s administration demonstrates the will to resolve their internal disputes and unite in fighting the bigger threat which is extremism.

Others who addressed the conference include French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner who urged Ahmed to step up joint actions with Somalia's northern regions of Puntland and Somaliland, promising his government help to curb the menace along Somalia’s shores.

The U.N. conference in Istanbul is also exploring ways to combat piracy off the Somali coast, which is threatening both the regional and the world maritime activities.

Back in the war-torn country, Hizbul Islam, one of Somalia’s Islamist insurgent groups described the conference as conspiracy against Somali people.

"The conference is meant to support African Union forces and not Somali people as claimed,” said Sheikh Mohammed Ma’alin, the group’s foreign affairs secretary.

Somalia has not had any effective government since 1991 ouster of former president Mohammed Siad Barre.
