'Best chance' for Somalia peace

Francois Fall (l) said it was important to see President Yusuf in the capital

The UN envoy to Somalia has urged the country not to waste "the best opportunity for peace for 16 years" after visiting the president.

Francois Fall urged President Abdullahi Yusuf to set up an inclusive government following the ousting of an Islamist group from the capital, Mogadishu.

Meanwhile, the sacked speaker of parliament has said he fears Mr Yusuf could become a dictator.

Sharif Hassan Sheikh Adan was impeached after several rows with the president.

Mr Fall, surrounded by tight security as he arrived in Mogadishu, held talks with President Yusuf concerning the plans to send an African peacekeeping force to Somalia, to replace the Ethiopian troops who helped drive out the Union of Islamic Courts.

Mr Yusuf arrived in Mogadishu last week for the first time since being elected president at peace talks in 2004.

Somalia has not had a functioning national government since Siad Barre was toppled in 1991.

"I want to congratulate you. To see the president in Villa Somalia [the presidential palace] is a very important step," Mr Fall told the president.

"There has been a lot of crime, a lot of devastation, but if you look back and say: 'This man killed my son or husband,' you will never be reconciled in this country," the envoy said.

'Rule by force'

The US has also urged reconciliation in Somalia and said the vote by MPs to impeach the speaker of parliament was likely to have a negative impact on dialogue.

Mr Adan was sacked for holding unauthorised talks with the Islamists while they controlled much of southern Somalia last year.

"There is a dictatorship risk and some of the elements are already in place, such as the emergency legislation [passed by parliament last weekend]," he told Reuters news agency in Rome.

"The president believes he can rule by force... He will try to rule the country alone, with the help of Ethiopian troops," he warned.

Mr Adan had fallen out with both the interim president and the prime minister over recent developments in Somalia.

"The symbol of the president and the prime minister combining to push him out is counter to that spirit of reconciliation," US assistant secretary of state for African affairs Jendayi Frazer said.

The Ethiopians say they want to leave Somalia by the end of the month and regional diplomats are trying to muster enough troops for an 8,000-strong African force for Somalia.

So far only Uganda has agreed to provide peacekeepers

Peace shall inshallah prevail. The warlords are disarming. The gov't is asserting its control. Ethiopia is leaving, AU troops are coming inshallah. The President is talking to all parties. The prime minister is functioning well with bringing in his banadir constituency.

PROGRESS IS A SLOW PROCESS, BUT THINGS SEEM TO BE MOVING ALONG.

^^^Change is in the air, the fakery of the clan courts who in six months could not even make an admin for Mogadishu, today we have a nationaly recognised government in control of the whole country bar, the secessionist traingle. This is a historic moment and one that all the Somali people welcome.

^Oh my this was still yet to come,of all things you have today denied the fact that Muqdisho was in better state than any time during the civil wars, during the Transitional so called government, including the current chunk.

Nationaly recognised is all you got? how good is that if you dont 'have trust from your own populace. We all know that Xamar is in chaos today, and will never get back to peace, because the same thugs that were chased out have returned to "rule" and bring peace, what moronic way to look at things.

So yeah keep sugar coating it, the reality on the ground will remain a choas.

As for SL, hmmm, remeber when the TFG was stuck in Baydhabo, you were being very polite and actually spelled out somaliland's name, today, one can sense your attitude change due to the two Xabashi tanks...Africans will always be Africans.

^ Xamar is not in chaos. If it were the President and Prime minister would be on a spear.

The only people barking are seccestionist, Ayatollah Castro, SNM Mujahid Sea, and the likes of you are wanting somalia to be in utter failure. government has disarmed the warlords and have expanded control from The depths of Toghdeer region to that of Jubbada hoose.

^^^Saxib there is no millitary intention with regards to the secesionist triangle or Somaliland.

As for Mogadishu, it took four months of blood letting betwen them and the warlords in which hundreds died before the clan courts were able to take over the city, and then they did not built and adminstration for it, thats a fact.

The TFG has been there for a few weeks it has put in place an adminstration including all the main clans, it has opened up the police stations and will built up each of the 15 districts of the capital. This is a great news, dont you agree?

As for my attitude, Somalialand poses no danger to the TFG in any sense, its like fearing Djibouti which we dont.

How can Somalia fear tiny djibouti let alone a 50x50 clan triangle?

Dialogue is the final solution. The people of Somalia are moving forward.
