Shaikh Shariif doesn't represent anybody, has no power base, no bargaining chips and certainly not for the interests of his clan. This explains why he has little support from his clan elders in stark contrast to Geedi who seems to have some support from his clan elders. The reason being he stands for the foriegn idealogy of Political Islam. Somalis never had any extensive experience with political Islam and are still deeply in love with their sub-clan. There's 101 versions of Islam in Somalia one for every qabiil and subqabiil. Shiekh Shariif and others are simply delusional if they think political Islam is viable option under present conditions. The ICU leadership is well adviced to drop this quixotic notion of political Islam taking flight in Somalia and be more "Somali" if they wanna give themselves a shooting chance of occupying the halls of power.

Somalis have had enough experience with the "Foreign ideology called political Islam", for hundreds of years way before the I.C.U or any Sheikh Shariff existsed.

 

The Somalis nomadic warriors are well known for contributing to the forces of Imam Ahmad during the war with Abysnia.Interestingly enough the Somali nomadic warriors where accompanied by Foreign Jihadist from Yemen and Turkey.

 

Furthermore various somali entities have formed sultantes and political alliances based on islamic and local culture.Later political Islamic movements such as the so caled Mad Mullah led resistance against the Abysnians and their allies.

 

However i agree with Socod Badane all of these movements have failed due to the inherent reliance of somalis on their clan.But i wouldn't go the extent of saying the so called "political Islam" is alien to traditional somali culture.There has been a fusion of the two in somali history, although the latter has been more dominant in recent times.
