facklexm Posted April 26, 2006 Kenya has deported 19 Somali recruits who were too unfit to complete their police training at a Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) camp. They were among 200 former militia fighters selected to pioneer a new police force for the war-torn country. The KWS said 12 of them were suffering from old war wounds and the others found the training course too strenous. Somalia has been without an effective central government for 15 years and has been carved up by rival militias. The BBC's Mohammed Adow in Nairobi says there are conflicting reports about why the recruits were expelled, with some suggestions that it was because of indisicipline. But the KWS said that most of the recruits were sent home because they have bullets lodged in their legs. Many militia worked for rival warlords that had divided the country up between them. Under an agreement reached by faction leaders, former militia will be recruited into a new national police force loyal to the transitional government in Somalia.
