General Duke Posted March 30, 2009 I wonder can the Oilive tree grow in Somalia's Mudug region?
peasant Posted March 31, 2009 I think some species of the genus are found in east africa . Here is some extracts from wikki. Olives are now cultivated in many regions of the world with Mediterranean climates, such as South Africa, Chile, Australia, the Mediterranean Basin, Israel, Palestinian Territories and California and in areas with temperate climates such as New Zealand, under irrigation in the Cuyo region in Argentina which has a desert climate. They are also grown in the Córdoba Province, Argentina, which has a temperate climate with rainy summers and dry winters (Cwa)[12]. The climate in Argentina changes the external characteristics of the plant but the fruit keeps its original characteristics [13]. Subspecies There are at least five natural subspecies distributed over a wide range: Olea europaea subsp. europaea (Europe) Olea europaea subsp. cuspidata (from Eritrea and Ethiopia south throughout East Africa, also in Iran to China) Olea europaea subsp. guanchica (Canaries) Olea europaea subsp. maroccana (Morocco) Olea europaea subsp. laperrinei (Algeria, Sudan, Niger, India)
General Duke Posted March 31, 2009 ^^^^Thanks, date palms are easy trees to grow in Somalia's Puntland regions. I once went to Tunisia and even in the depth of the desert you could see rows of these beautiful Olive trees.
peasant Posted March 31, 2009 ^ Oh tunisia has a long history with Olives perhaps that was the very reason the romans invaded carthage. I recall from a roman history course, a remarks by a roman general something about the size of figs and olive trees in carthage to emphasize the threat Carthaginian posed against rome.
