General Duke Posted June 16, 2008 Somalia: President Yusuf visits Djibouti after peace deal 16 Jun 16, 2008 - 3:23:49 PM DJIBOUTI CITY, Djibouti June 16 (Garowe Online) - The president of Somalia's interim government, Abdullahi Yusuf, is visiting the neighboring Republic of Djibouti where a peace deal between his government and its opposition was inked last week. Aides to the Somali leader told Garowe Online that President Yusuf will hold consultations with Djiboutian government officials, especially regarding the recent peace agreement with the Islamist-dominated Alliance for the Re-liberation of Somalia (ARS). Djiboutian President Gelle and Somali President Yusuf Addressing journalists, the Somali President criticized Eritrea for a deadly raid on Djiboutian troops along the border between the two Red Sea nations. "Eritrea's military aggression against Djibouti is unacceptable," President Yusuf said. There are efforts currently underway in Djibouti City to reconcile Yusuf and his Djiboutian host, President Ismail Omar Gelle, who have been at political odds for years, according to informed sources. The Djiboutian leader supported and helped establish a Somali transitional national government in 2000, which then-Puntland ruler Yusuf refused to recognize. Analysts consider President Gelle as being close to Somali Islamist leaders like Sheih Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, the ARS chairman. Other Islamist leaders – mainly hardliners – have refused to recognize the June peace agreement and continue to live in exile in Asmara, capital of Eritrea.
