General Duke Posted November 11, 2010 Puntland State of Somalia wins praise 10 Nov 10, 2010 - 10:58:51 AM The UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy to Somalia, Mr Augustine Mahiga has said that he encountered in Puntland, a semi-autonomous state in North-eastern Somalia, a different place than he imagined. Mr Mahiga was speaking in Garowe town, the capital of Puntland State, 1,000 kilometers north of Mogadishu, at a reception held by the authority’s president, Abdurahman Sheikh Mohamed Farole, on Wednesday. The envoy indicated that he came to Puntland to see the security improvement in the region. He welcomed the facts that Puntland managed to eliminate the threat from terrorists. Mr Mahiga’s remarks came just a week after Puntland declared victory over the militias of the radical Islamist leader, Sheikh Mohamed Said Atam, who have been fighting the authority since July, this year. “Puntland has achieved success in security and stability that must be emulated by the rest of Somalia,” said the UN envoy who hailed the region’s close collaboration with the Transitional Federal Government in Mogadishu.
