General Duke Posted January 25, 2007 U.S. Conducts Somalia Airstrike; Envoy Urges Talks With Islamists Published: January 25, 2007 MOGADISHU, Somalia, Jan. 24 (Reuters) — The United States has conducted a second airstrike in Somalia, American officials said Wednesday. The top American envoy in East Africa, meanwhile, urged an Islamist leader to work for reconciliation with the Somali government. The new airstrike came roughly two weeks after a strike by an AC-130 plane killed what the United States said were eight fighters affiliated with Al Qaeda who had been hiding among Islamists pushed to Somalia’s southern tip by Ethiopian and Somali government forces. One official said the targets this week were Islamist fighters, who once controlled much of Somalia but were defeated in a two-week war that started in late December. A second source said the target was a Qaeda operative. A Pentagon spokesman declined to comment. “We’re going to go after Al Qaeda and the global war on terror, wherever it takes us,” said the spokesman, Bryan Whitman. Washington says Somali Islamists have protected Qaeda members accused of bombing the American Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998 and an Israeli-owned hotel in Kenya in 2002. Al Qaeda’s second in command, Ayman al-Zawahri, vowed in a video posted on the Internet on Wednesday that Islamist fighters would defeat Ethiopian soldiers in Somalia. “The mujahedeen will break their backs with God’s power and help,” Mr. Zawahri said in the video. The United States and other countries are pushing on diplomatic and military fronts to help the newly empowered Somali government build on the gains it made in the war, which enabled it to enter the capital for the first time since it was organized in 2004. On Wednesday, the American ambassador to Kenya, Michael E. Ranneberger, met with an Islamist leader, Sheik Sharif Ahmed, who had fled Somalia and is being held by Kenyan intelligence agents in a hotel on the outskirts of the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. Mr. Ranneberger has said Mr. Ahmed is among those who could play a role in the reconciliation that the United States and diplomats from some other countries say is necessary to unify Somalia. Mr. Ahmed, one of the most visible faces of the Islamists during its six-month rule of most of southern Somalia, surrendered at the Kenyan border. Diplomats say Kenya, with United States support, has pushed the Somali government leaders to sit down with Mr. Ahmed for talks.

N.O.R.F Posted January 25, 2007 ^^Why were the TFG not informed of the airstrike Duke? Lack of respect for their 'leaders'? But i guess Zanawi was aware right? Is this the start of 'we will do whatever we want in Somalia'? Any thought Somalia was a soveriegn state have all but evaporated over the last month. Horaay the TFG! General Duke Posted January 25, 2007 ^^Give us your perspective on this story.
N.O.R.F Posted January 25, 2007 Ethios and US have free access to do what they like and TFG and its supporters seam to think its fine! Shiekh Sharif will come to the negotiating table much to the disgust of Yeey and Geedi who will feel threatened and insist he is not welcome. The Ethios will support Yeey and Geedi. The US, UN, AL & EU will support the presence of Shiekh Sharif in the reconciliation effort. Then we will see what happens.
General Duke Posted January 25, 2007 ^^^A rather poor try, what does Sharif Ahmed bring to the tablle? and if he is so important to them, why bomb his supporters, his allies, his friends his men on the same day they meet him? What message does this send to the rest of the warriors getting bombed, he is helping us, or telling on us?
N.O.R.F Posted January 25, 2007 ^^Ditto at the poor attempt. If i knew the answers i would be a millionaie by now. I sense your reluctant to state the shiekh is your only hope of 'neutralising' xamar/south somalia. Still towing the line? ps,,,,how do you know who what is being bombed ya Duke? Two weeks ago they bombed civillians and animals!
General Duke Posted January 25, 2007 ^^^Northerner, how can he neutralise anything? He was never a soldier, they [shabaab] never took orders from him, he never belonged to the main clan and the main alliance was throough marriege, thus the south is not even in contention. Bay, Bakool, Gedo, Juba's, Lower Shabbele are all quite with not a single incident so far. Mogadishu is is a policing operation and weapon collection project. My point is, the government has nothing to lose talking to him, he is a spent force, he can replace Salad Jelle, as deputy something, but my question was how can anyone take him seriously by making a deal with the Americans and Kenyans, who played a role in decimating his group? How do you talk when your men are getting bombed, some think he gave the latest info, who knows?
N.O.R.F Posted January 25, 2007 ^^Thats just predictable speculation from the TFG fans. If i knew the ins and out of the situation i would comment but i dont (just like you be the way) so i cant really put anything of significance down on paper (cyber paper). The US, EU, AL & AU realise that the TFGoons are weak and do not have the support of the Somali people. I think these organisations really do want a lasting peace in Somalia and are working towards it (US have interests) whereas the Ethios want a return to warlordism and 'advise' Yeey and Geedi not to accept talks with Sharif. Who know he may become president during the elections!
