There will be no fighting in Somalia!!!

In an exclusive interview with Mohamed Yusuf of SomaliNet last week, Somalia president, Mr. Abdulahi Yusuf Ahmed was upbeat about today’s political climate and promised to end Somalia’s lawlessness without major clashes between his government and the opposition. When asked if he is planning to invade Mogadishu he replied with “Listen to me very carefully. There will be no fighting in Somalia and I promise to lead our nation into prosperity lasting peace without using any means of forceâ€. He defended the government’s recruitment of thousands of former members of the armed forces and new militias by saying in order to maintain peace, we need armed forces. He said the people want to see functioning national government but a very few individuals want to keep the country the way it is now for personal gains.

As its predecessors, the federal government of Somalia was greeted by oppositions as soon as it was formed in Nairobi, Kenya after two years of national reconciliation conference. Surprisingly enough, the new government is gaining weight while its oppositions are losing ground without armed confrontations.

 

Soon after Mr. Abdulahi Yusuf was elected, many Mogadishu faction leaders denounced the new government and started branding it as an Ethiopian puppy and un-Islamic. Many parliament members including the speaker of the house severed ranks with the government and went to Mogadishu instead of pre-agreed Jowhar.

 

Finally, the president, prime minister and the rest of the government officials and members of the parliament went to Jowhar in hopes of ruling the country from that little town. Many political analysts thought Jowhar camp could not last more than few months and politicians would go back to the drawing boards to call for yet another national conference in a couple of years. That did not happen so far and the men and women in Jowhar seem very determined to outlast all other interim governments by doing right everything failed governments did wrong, including staying away from Mogadishu as long as it is controlled by what they call hostile elements.

 

While the interim government is forging international treaties and rebuilding Somalia armed forced slowly but steadily, Mogadishu camp is deteriorating rapidly. Government appointed Mogadishu mayor just got a very crucial endorsement from faction leaders who control sizable enclave in the city today. In a surprise announcement, former Muse Sudi field commanders held a press conference with the mayor and said Madina district of Mogadishu endorses and welcomes the federal government. Some parts of Mogadishu are controlled by pro-government faction leaders like Hussein Aidid, the son of late Mohamed Farah Aidid who holds a ministerial position in the federal government.

 

Mogadishu camp, dominated by three very strong faction leaders Muse Sudi Yalahow, Osman Atto and Mohamed Qanyare lost another very important ally few weeks back. The man who controls much of Somalia’s fertile land and former senior military commander, Mr. Barre Adan Shire (Hirale) left Mogadishu to his turf, Kismayo after his proposal to mediate Mogadishu and Jowhar camps was rejected. In a press conference he held right after he went back to Kismayo, Mr. Hirale said ninety five percent of the parliament members who were in Mogadishu at the time accepted his proposal to end divisions among government and parliament members. However, Mogadishu strong men did not like it.

 

Another setback came after members of the parliament within the Mogadishu camp started to go to Jowhar for the first time.

 

Whatever the future holds for Somalia, its political climate is unpredictable and faction leaders change sides as often as people change cars.

Mr.President you can use any means Necessary If we are to to get prosperity and lasting peace in return. That is just my point of view.

As much as i dont like Abdullahi Yusuf...he made some excellent decision by not setting up in MOG like previous administrations which were held hostage by warlords..

 

One city should'nt hold rest of somalia hostage, isolating MOG and it's warlords is great plan instead of full confrontation.

 

A/Y is not be trusted though like all politicians ?
