Thinking of a united Ethiopia and Eritrea

Recommended Posts

think it is overdue now to keep quiet. We have to break the ice of silence when injustice is reigning in our country. Yes, there is a lot of talk about development in Ethiopia , but there is no a lot of talk about justice, equality, harmony.

Siye Abraha's case is once again postponed and the judge has been absent. The regime in Ethiopia is suffering from terminal illness. It is destroying itself without realizing it. The government of the Prime Minister thinks it is destroying Siye, but it is making Siye more powerful. It is destroying itself and making Siye Ethiopian Mandela. How can this regime talk about corruption while itself is crowned by this type of overt corruption.

What is development? Development is not only collecting money, building schools or inviting investors... what about justice, freedom, fairness, impartiality, and transparency and security, peace? The government cares a lot about development talk shows but it does not see the beam in its eyes. A man cannot live by bread alone. The prime minister has seen the world even before he has become the powerful man in the country, but it seems he did not change his old philosophy. I am honestly disgusted by the action of the regime against Siye. What is democracy? Is this democracy?

I personally have been hoping that the government will learn from its past mistakes. However, while I am talking about unity, love, peace, and harmony on one side, on the other hand, the government says things which are against unity, love, peace, harmony, reconciliation and mediation.

The recent interview with Aboy Sebhat Nega was heart-rending. While Eritreans are suffering under the name of independence and fleeing their beloved home in all directions, sometimes dying in the desert and sometimes drowning in the sea before they reach their dream destiny, Aboy Sebhat Nega has been so proud for liberating Eritreans to suffer and he still wants to continue to do so. Eritreans have been living in refugee camps since 1967 up to now. There are no other people who suffer like Eritreans in the region. Shabia beats and rehearses empty prosperity drum all time long. However, Eritreans continue to suffer now even much worse than their fellow Ethiopians.

The port of Assab and Massawa have become ghost places since the war with Ethiopia. They are now training grounds for all the rebels from within Ethiopia and a transit for off loading military hardware for all sorts of rebellions one can imagine. While Ethiopia's natural ports are sitting idle, Ethiopia has to beg ports and spend a lot of money to use the transits from Sudan, Djibouti, Somalia,... and still the government believes all must continue like this or worse.

I do not understand why the government has never given a chance for all the people to coexist in harmony than pitching all the people at each other's neck by all sorts of hatred and animosity. I can hardly understand why the Ethiopian government believes this political pattern is good for Eritrean and Ethiopian while people are suffering.

It appeared to me that if EPRDF was progressive, while EPRDF members were eating and drinking with Issayas for the ten years before the war, they could have asked Issayas to share power. I am sure If Issayas was willing to share power with Mengistu, he could have been very happy to do so with EPRDF if EPRDF was concerned about the people in general.

If EPRDF could have done that we would not have had the bloody war which has claimed about 70,000 lives from both sides. The country including Eritrea by now could enjoyed prosperity without any hassle. The good military relationship between TPLF and Shabia could have been used as a bridge to bind the people together which was already there. We would not have had the bitter Eritreans hatred now which is prevailing against Ethiopia. Eritreans could have had greater self-esteem then and could be proud to call themselves Ethiopians. Now some even say they are not Habesha. EPRDF could have reigned to infinity without any hassle. However, EPRDF has chosen the hard way of doing its business.

Someone approached me very recently to tell her about the country called Eritrea. I explained to her without any bias. She told me that they way Eritreans present it, it seems completely different. She asked me that if Eritreans are not different race from Ethiopian. I told her they are the same people then she asked me that why is then all these nationalism? I could not answer that question.

I believe in freedom strongly. If justice, equality, freedom prevails in Ethiopia, what do Eritreans gain by isolating themselves with empty ports? What do Eritreans gain by having deep hatred against Ethiopians? If there is freedom and honesty, Eritreans still could be independent without having deep hatred against their fellow Ethiopians and without land-locking their fellow Ethiopians. To be independent they do not have to hate their fellow Ethiopians.

If there could have been peace, all the ports could have been busy now. Now Massawa could have teeming with tourists from the whole world and from the rest Ethiopia. Massawa could have been a hot business spot in the whole Africa. The local people could have been benefited far well than anyone else. However, now Massawa is a hot spot for Ethiopian rebels who bring nothing except guns and bullets and drain the resource of the local people without any input.

My appeal goes to young Ethiopians and Eritreans to come together and to determine their destiny. Neither the Ethiopian government policies nor Issayas policies are beneficial to both sides. I believe the Ethiopian government has to be removed democratically without a drop of blood. Although I myself I was ready to forgive the regime, however, the regime does not learn and change all the time. Yesterday, today and tomorrow it is all the same. It does not seem to change at all. They preach democracy but they do not practice it.

My recommendation is that we must avoid hatred. Hatred never solves a problem. Hatred creates more inimical and destruction. We must also learn to forgive those who rebuke themselves.

We Ethiopians have one big problem either we never correct our selves like the regime in Ethiopia or never forgive those who correct themselves. We have to admit we are human and make mistakes and learn everyday. No one is perfect and we need to appreciate. We are also tribally, ethnically prejudices about each other. We have to admit, accept that all tribes are equal. They may have differences but those differences some only exist only in our brain. Some of them are visible because we may have different mode of life which are all environmental and historical.

If we unite, it is very easy either to remove the regime totally or to command it to do what the populace wanted it to do. It is possible to remove Prime Minister Meles without a drop of blood and without a loss of a single life. Unity based on harmony is the most powerful weapon than buying any hardware or weapons from outside which leaves us with financial debt, all sort of carnage and loss of lives.
