Sheikh Sharif Ahmed seeks to meet PM Geedi

During yesterday's brief appearance of the US Ambassador to the UN, an Islamist insider and confident said that Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, the leader of the Islamic Courts Union (ICU) asked him to check secretly Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Gedi's position on the possibility of face-to-face meeting between them in Baidabo. The goal is to end the hostility between the two groups and relocate the government of Interim Prime Minister Ali Gedi to Mogadishu.

 

Although one of the most widely accepted myths is that Interim Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Gedi is Addis Ababa puppet and the Islamic Courts Union (ICU) are against the Ethiopian Interference, yet the prospect of such meeting between the Leader of the internationally recognized Government and the chairman of the Union of the Islamic Courts, a moderate face of Islamist and leading figure who controls most of the country will be enormous task to be achieved.

 

As the news is widely believed to be the fruits of intensive negotiation between the speaker of the Parliament Mr. Hassan Sh. Adan and the President of Djibouti Mr. Omar Gelle during his recent visit to Djibouti City. Many consider President Omar Gelle the force behind this new initiative.

 

Although the new proposed UN resolution draft that tabled by the US may not be successful, yet it my lead to intense diplomatic efforts to achieve a permanent peace in Somalia particular and the whole region in general.

 

The New UN draft would lift a 1992 arms embargo against Somalia so that troops in the "protection and training mission" could be militarily equipped and it would ban Somalia's neighbors (Including Ethiopia) from sending soldiers - a key point for the Islamist -.

 

It will be the breakthrough that the people of Somalia are waiting if both leaders who came from same Sub-Clan capitalize their adventure and suppress the hardliners from their groups in order to reach a peaceful solution to the current crisis.

This is good development. The SOL nomads now have started to realize that the TFG is the best way (and for majority of somalis the only way) to put the country back together and reconstruct it.

 

Mr. Geedi is now Somali and not Tigray. Thats one major improvement by the ICU crowd that needs to be commended.

The ICU crowd also realizes now that US (the folks with the biggest stick) has realized that their attempt at hanging around Mugadishu by warlords or appeasing imposters will not lead to the Somalia thats an important country in east africa. US has now come to TFG and US is doing everything it can to satisfy TFG demands and plan for Somalia.

You are close, very close to home now. Ask yourself this question. If the US, Egypt, Djibuti (rumuor has it even Libya) are reconciling with TFG and towing the line; what could possibly make Ethiopia not tow the line of TFG? Ethiopia is a poor country.

It will not be long before you nomads here accept the fact that its the TFG that controls the diplomatic or security of Somalia and not the other way around.

Not a single warlord from Mugadishu went or worked with Ethiopia bypasing or around the TFG. Whoever may have contacted ethiopia, has to first go to Baydhoa and exactly get permission what he can and cannot do or say to any foreign counry.

They met on the sidelines of a meeting between Ahmed's group and staff of the seven-nation Intergovernmental Authority on Development.

 

The Islamic leaders "want a stable region and have good relations with our neighbors. But we cannot hold talks with Ethiopia unless it withdraws its forces inside the country. This is the main difference between us," Adow said.

 

Tekeda conveyed Ethiopia's concerns "at this time of tension," said Wahide Belay, an Ethiopian Foreign Affairs ministry spokesman.

 

The minister "told them that Ethiopia is trying to avoid this clash, even though they have violated our rights and sovereignty," Wahide said Monday.

 

 

The secretariat of Intergovernmental Authority on Development issued a statement after their meeting with the Islamist group, known as the Council of Islamic Courts , calling "for the withdrawal of all foreign forces from Somalia and respect for the territorial integrity of Somalia and appeals to all countries to observe the U.N. arms embargo on Somalia

Adow denied meeting with Ethiopian minister but said they met with Ethiopia officers in Djibouti.

This has to be the joke of the day.

Is it because the Ethiopians did not consider it appropriate for a deputy minister to meet a foreign "minister" of a somali organization? Was there a protocol snug there?

Please switch the lights that show Exit door this way for these ICU folks. They are lost and confused. The exit they thought of fighting their way to control all of somalia has been stuck in quicksand. The diplomatic support they wanted as exit with Arabs, sand shifted and is no where to be seen. Sudan is itself working with Ethiopia to fix whatever may have been broken by the Arab league.

Such statement is counter-productive, and hardly conducive to the Somali reconcialation. Farther more, war won't really effect Caasho, it will only be destructive to the good people of Bay & Bakool who are already such price in the sad saga. Do you really know uproot them again?
