Liberia: Somalian Refugees in Liberia turn street beggars

With rather strange look in the faces of Liberians who are just graduating from civil hostilities, the influx of the light skin color as many may termed in Liberia as white people “Somalia Refugees” seen begging people at various street corners in Liberia is getting out of indefinite proportion.

 

Over the week, a local child rights advocacy organization, Fore-running of children’s universal Right for Survival (Focus) called on LRRRC and UNHCR to quickly move in to assist Somalia Refugees who are now surviving inhumanely through street begging around Monrovia and its surrounding cities.

 

According to information gathered from FOCUS, over 500 Somalia refugees mostly women and children fleeing the bloody war currently going on in the Somalia capital Mogadishu have arrived in Liberia via sea. It is not clear whether UNHCR or LRRRC is aware of their presence in Monrovia but their survival here is deteriorating by days indicated upon their physical conditions and constant harassment in street begging.

 

FOCUS further alarmed that those elderly Somalia refugees turn street beggars who are mainly women and children between the ages of 1-12 risk indecent treatment if their plight is not adhered to. According to a release from FOCUS, sexual exploitation of these children remains their primary focus. The children rights group noted that while the coming of these Somalia refugees might not have been registered with LRRRC and UNHCR as means of assisting them benefit from food ration, shelter and other attention, there was an urgent need for both organizations to swiftly address the needs of the refugees.

 

“If the two institutions do not remove these refugees from the streets in a relatively shorter period in time, especially during the rainy season, they might suffer from preventable disease that could lead to an outbreak of epidemic”, A FOCUS release maintained. It is sad seeing other Africans who suppose to be under the protection of the United Nations as the result of war their country being strangulated and barely surviving on a half day meal.

 

Rainy season is very difficult in Liberia and the way things are handled with these Somalia refugees are regrettable.

Of course it matters, what i was obviously implying with 'dirty', was that some of our people have been reduced to beg in the meanest of streets, it means we have sunk ourselves to a new low.

It certainly seems so, things are spiralling out of control, and we have already lost a lot of self respect and self confidence. We shall see many more things which shall leave us in dismay, things which will threaten to shatter forever our hopes, and doubt whether our country will ever be again.

 

But no pit is big enough to confine a nation, as long as there are Somali babies being born we have a hope of self-redemption as a nation. We will recover, but how and when none knows.

Let us not confuse the word "government" with the TFG. Life in Muqdisho today is the same as that reported in Liberia, Women and kids beg in the streets, they are homeless because they were internally displaced families to begin with from previous draughts and clan conflicts outside Muqdisho. Since the arrival of Xabashi troops, many refugee camps close to contested areas in Muqdisho were abandoned, The main market is constantly robbed by the clan militia of the TFG, no one feels safe in Muqdisho today and I wouldn't be surprised if residents abandon the whole city in masse to other parts of the country for lack of basic safety. I spoke not only with family members back in that town but their neighbours and they were all pessimistic and depressed. All police stations are filled with women and young men rounded up in the streets and even bribe is not accepted for their release, somalis are being shipped as terrorists to Ethiopia. If anything should happen, no matter how painful it is, the TFG should be fought to free the somalis who suffered because of these thugs and bloody warlords.

 

Dadkii waa ladhacaa, naagihii waa la kufsadaa, caruurtii nolol maheestaan, all in Muqdisho markaasaa afka waxaa laga bartay Dowlad, Dowladda la sheego intee joogtaa? they are the ones behind people's misery and want to cash in on the blood of the innocent. They are agents of doom and destruction set upon our country to ensure its demise.

 

Can anyone think why they are protected by platoons of Xabasho? Simply because no one wants them around.
