Kenya ministers 'boycott cabinet'

Allies of Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga have said they will boycott cabinet meetings until a dispute with President Mwai Kibaki has been sorted.

 

The two men clashed on Sunday after Mr Odinga suspended two ministers accused of corruption - only for Mr Kibaki to reverse the decision hours later.

A Kenyan minister, whose suspension over corruption claims threw the government into chaos, has launched an attack on Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

 

Agriculture Minister William Ruto told the BBC he was not to blame for a huge scam involving illegal sales of maize.

Millions of dollars earmarked for victims of the Ethiopian famine of 1984-85 went on buying weapons, according to a BBC investigation.

 

Former rebel leaders told the BBC that they posed as merchants in meetings with charity workers to get aid money.

 

They then diverted the cash to fund their attempts to overthrow the government of the time.

 

Documents released by the CIA confirmed aid was "almost certainly being diverted for military purposes".

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — An opposition candidate for Ethiopia’s Parliament was stabbed to death early Tuesday in what opposition leaders said was part of a widening campaign of repression ahead of May elections.

 

The candidate, Aregawi Gebre-Yohannes, was killed at a restaurant he owned near the town of Shire in Ethiopia’s Tigray region by a group of six men who had shadowed his movements for the previous two days, said Gebru Asrat, a leader of the Arena party, a member of an alliance of opposition parties.

 

“They cut him, they stabbed him in the stomach, and he died,” Mr. Gebru said. “It’s becoming very difficult to run” in the elections, he added.

 

Bereket Simon, the government’s communications minister, dismissed political motives for the attack and said the opposition was trying to tarnish the government’s image.

Ethiopia Opposition Rethinks Election Campaign After Candidate Killed

 

Tigrayans, an ethnic minority in the north, make up about six percent of Ethiopia's population, but comprise the majority of the EPRDF's decision-making inner circle.

Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, who is seeking re-election from his Tigrayan birthplace, celebrated the TPLF's anniversary last month with a speech in which he was reported to have urged supporters to "fight the enemy".

I think Ethiopia has been in more volatile political atmosphere than the more advanced Kenya in post-Somalia state collapse. Kenya has the potential to lead a new East Africa economic community once the Lamu port is fully financed and a common currency agreement adopted.

 

With Eritrea already gone and Somalia's future return to political independence (now fully impeded by the West), Ethiopia might be forced by circumstances beyond its control to assume a dominated position as being "an Island in a Muslim sea". The Oromo Majority will either be given the chance to rule like the Shia in Iraq or the balkanization process of its diverse ethnic groups might take an accelerated pace.
