Liibaan Posted September 10, 2009 Somaliland MPs Held an Impromptu Meeting in South Hargeisa Following Closure of Parliament HARGEISA, Somaliland (Somaliland Globe)- A cross-party group of MPs held an impromptu meeting in south Hargeisa last night after the Somaliland police took control of the parliament on Tuesday, Ahmed Mohamed Diriye, KULMIYE lawmaker, told The Somaliland Globe. Thirty-two MPs, 26 from the opposition and 6 from the ruling party, held their first meeting since they were kicked out of the parliament on Tuesday to discuss their next step forward. The meeting which was attended by the Legislative Leadership was held in the private residence of Ahmed Mohamed Diriye, one of the prime movers of the impeachment trial against the president. Mr. Diriye’s residence was surrounded by private armed security guards to prevent any unwarranted intrusion into Diriye’s private residence. Police patrol vehicles were cruising around the meeting area including the vehicle of the Commander of the Somaliland Police Force, Mohamed Sakadi Dubad, who hails from that part of the capital city. He was seen talking to elders and community leaders to “protest” against the gathering of MPs in the midst of that residential area. Elders rejected his request for the expulsion of the gathering of lawmakers hosted by their MP, Mr. Diriye. The meeting resolved that the lawmakers should come together on Saturday at the parliament hall to proceed with their historic trial on impeachment charges against President Rayale. Asked what they would do if they were refused entry into parliament, Mr. Diriye said they would carry out their public duties in “any other place that we deem appropriate”.
